Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey J. Porter.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in a very creative household where on any given day, I was teaching my imaginary students, choreographing a dance routine, painting, designing clothes, dressing up our pets, writing poetry, or acting in a play that my musical brother wrote for us to perform for the neighborhood. I took to the arts early, needless to say. I started painting when I was probably about 8 and began my first apprenticeship for a professional artist at age 10. I began selling my paintings in high school; my senior year I received a scholarship from Savannah College of Art & Design, where I continued my education received a BFA in film and video.
I quickly learned that the collaborative art of film making was more about relying on so many moving parts: teams of willing players, logistics, management, money, and typically less about the art, so, I ventured back to the independent & solitary art of painting. I’ve explored many mediums, photography, resin work, encaustic painting, and the classic mediums of oil, acrylic, pastel, and really anything that can be applied to canvas, panel, or paper while retaining conservation properties. Art is my outlet to express the introverted part of myself in an extroverted way. Art is a cathartic release for me, an expression of my soul, and fortunately, also my bread and butter.
Lindsey J. Porter is an American Southern artist with a discipline in fine art painting. Her collectors
span widely across the U.S. and recently her work has gained the attention of international galleries and collectors. Porter is represented by select galleries around the U.S.; her studio presently is in Birmingham, AL
Please tell us about your art.
Lately I have been doing a lot of works on paper with ink and watercolor, as well as a recent collection of abstract collages. A current series of works on paper, “Botanicals and Geometrics,” derives from an intuitive process of abstracting form, line, and dimension. That particular series is loosely represented subjects that are inspired by the organic variety of nature. My work is a result of intuitive moments and my subconscious mind.
My work embraces the freedom of expression and welcomes all interpretations. Someone might look at an abstract piece of mine and think “flower”, but in fact that “flower” might not actually look like a flower to someone else because in fact, it’s just an organic loose line that can be seen however one wishes to see. I use high quality; archival fine art materials and my papers are sourced from around the world. I place importance on the longevity of my pieces out of respect for the art, as well as the collector. Each piece is one of a kind, I never duplicate a painting.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Don’t EVER give up on your passion. Follow your heart and have faith and confidence in yourself and your work, and you will succeed. Push yourself to continue even in your weakest moments and be grateful.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
