Meet Decatur Chef and Caterer: Chuck Cleveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Cleveland.

Chuck, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved how things we buy in the grocery store could be transformed into something beautiful to look at as well as delicious,I come from a big family that cooks for all occasions and never have hired help to produce food for any kind of family function. I grew up between New Jersey and Decatur,Ga. I started selling food platters to make extra money about 9yrs ago and the response I got was a good one, co workers who purchased from me or just people I knew and one day someone said to me your food is really good, you should open a restaurant. I never looked at my food as that great so I took that as motivation to continue selling dinners, continue to play with food and today I have a small catering business and have done some amazing events and recently the opportunity to cook for R&B songstress Elle Varner.I have a long way to go but I am in love with food and not one day goes by that it feels like work, I lacked the support early on and I later in life found that support in some loving family that continues to be there and push me to be better than I was yesterday.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road, some of the struggles I faced were not having the money to do but pots and pans and anything needed in a kitchen to thrive, its not easy to get your name out in the food industry so getting people to recognize you if you are not on a tv screen or magazine is a big part of the struggle.

What’s the hardest part of your job?
The hardest part of my job is losing sleep, I tend to do that a lot simply because I am a little anal I just have to make sure I provide the freshest and best quality for my clients, it’s worth it to me to see them enjoy my sleepless meals!

How do you define success?
The way I define success is being recognized not for the amount of money I make but for how hard I work, how much effort I put into what I do. Of course, I would love for my small business to be successful but I also want people to continue to enjoy what I create.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to continue building my brand and expanding my business to reach a broader clientele.
