Meet Liz Barber Leventhal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Barber Leventhal.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have been creating things as far back as I can remember. Drawing and painting as a way of expressing myself has always been there. I went to Art School. I attended Moore College of Art and then Massachusetts College of Art. I trained with amazing professors. It was here that I developed my color language and really found the heart of where I paint. I have been painting professionally for eighteen years. I continue to experiment with materials and push the limits of how they perform on canvas. It’s a continual search. I live and work in Atlanta.

Please tell us about your art.
The basis of my processes intuitive.

The beginning is my favorite part. I love to look at the white canvas see endless possibilities. I can’t wait to be a part of the journey each time.

The most important thing for me to remember is to look and see what’s actually happening on the canvas and respond to that rather than having preconceived ideas. The materials move around the canvas and I directed them but always allowing them to speak. It’s easy to get caught up in having the materials bend to my will but I carefully use restraint. That has become a very important word to me.

I’m inspired by the richness of nature and the constant change of it. I capture shapes and color in my surroundings that move with the season change. It’s as if I’ve become obsessed with breaking apart what I’m seeing in nature down to a mathematical rhythm and laying that down on canvas

I try to keep everything I’m doing all about experimentation. I mix materials and constantly challenge them to see what they will do.

The subject matter of my paining really is in the process. It’s my point of view that makes it unique.

I love to see the resolution of the idea that was the beginning brought through the process to the end.

It is truly humbling when another person connects with one of my pieces. To know that I have captured something from the world around me and brought it to the canvas in a beautiful meaningful way. The fact that someone wants to take it home and live with it- that is the most meaningful thing to me about painting.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Waking up each day excited about what I will be exploring is success to me.

Connecting in a meaningful way to my viewers is essential.

The ability to take an idea from beginning to end being satisfied with the results ultimately is success.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have paintings in galleries across the country.
