Meet Lorraine Kamesha of Back to School Divas in Atlanta Metro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorraine Kamesha.

Lorraine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my first business out of desperate need. I had twin daughters who were about 18 months old at the time and was on summer break from pharmacy school. At the time, I was not working because of school and I needed a way to make $140 a week to keep their spot in daycare so that I could finish my PharmD degree.

Several of my friends and family reached out to me for help writing their resumes, which I did for free. After realizing what a valuable skill resume writing was, I decided to place an ad on Craiglist for resume revisions. Within a few weeks, the business was booming and I was writing several resumes a day! I literally spent the entire summer writing resumes on my couch. I was paid, but I was burnt out and still had to go back to school in the fall.

Later that summer, I expanded my services and began to take freelance academic writing, ad writing, and website copy jobs. However, as summer break was drawing to a close, I knew that I couldn’t continue to write so many projects AND keep up with my pharmacy coursework. The money was good, so quitting was not an option. I decided to hire writers and outsource the writing projects while I focused on marketing my services, growing the business, and getting out of pharmacy school.

Seven years later, my writing company is now a multiple six figure agency that completes hundreds of writing projects a week! I have written a book about my online business scaling methods called “Write Six Figs” which can be found on Amazon and I now teach service-based entrepreneurs how to run profitable businesses WITHOUT experiencing burnout and sacrificing time with their families. I’ve also founded a FB community for women going back to a school called “Back to School Divas” that helps encourage women going through some of the same obstacles that I faced. I enjoy what I do!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe that the journey to success and accomplishing goals is NEVER in a straight line. One of the biggest struggles I faced was making a living while trying to raise my children into the intelligent, bubbly, well-behaved little ladies that I knew they could be. I really struggled at first with keeping up with everything in my household as a single mother and maintaining a business with so many customers and critical deadlines. I wanted to spend more time with my kids, but I also had a vision for the lifestyle that I wanted us to live and financial struggle was not a part of my vision, lol. I wanted to make sure that my children had the same opportunities that I had growing up, but I also wanted to be able to spend more time with them and be present for field trips, classroom parties, and extra-curricular activities.

After four years in business, I realized that being more present for my children was a goal that required work just like any other goal and I began to structure my business so that I could achieve my financial goals AND my goals as a mother. I strongly believe that the trading time for dollars mindset is killing our communities and I am an advocate for women who own businesses and are struggling to find their idea of balance.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My zone of genius is teaching business owners how to replace themselves in their business so that they can bust through revenue ceilings and eliminate entrepreneur burn out. I am known for helping my clients secure the bag by working smarter and not harder. One of the things that I am most proud of is helping my clients structure their business so that they can scale their revenue in half the time and reach true financial freedom WITHOUT having to sacrifice the things they love doing most.

Over 75% of my clients are women, which means they oftentimes have children, work full-time, and are trying to run a business at the same time. We typically get less support with household responsibilities and take on the bulk of the child-rearing duties. What sets me apart from other business coaches is that I know from experience what entrepreneur burnout feels like and I have seen first hand what it does to the important relationships that we value most in our lives. Yes, being a business owner is a part of your identity. However, it is not the only thing that makes you who you are.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think that my ability to roll with the punches and solve problems has been two of my most valuable tools on the road to my success. There have been times when I woke up and there were fires to put out as soon as my feet hit the floor, and that can be really stressful. However, I always tell my clients that their main job as an entrepreneur is to wake up every day ready to solve problems. You can’t run or hide from problems as an entrepreneur, as doing so will cripple your business. Being adaptable to change will catapult your business to the next level, even while the environment around you is rocky.
