Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Luis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Cooking has always been a passion but I never understood what cuisine I wanted to put out into the world. Watching people is my favorite hobby, that is how I learn the best. So many summers/winters spent with the Grandparents, I had the pleasure to watch and learn one of their best crafts cooking. The love they poured into each dish, their hands simply creating magic. As the years went by, my career took me in so many directions, but cooking still was the highlight of my nights or weekends. During my birthday week, I visited my favorite Restaurant in Atlanta Dish Dive, I asked Jeff if I could do a pop-up dinner and he gave me a date on the spot. So our journey started right then and there. My Abuelas Food took over restaurants for over a year and half until it found it’s home in February 2020.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not coming from the Restaurant world, leaving my career behind, making difficult choices, and a pandemic is the start of the struggles. The industry is incredibly hard and demanding. It takes a lot to find a balance in all the chaos. So many have opened the doors for My Abuelas to become a reality, ten years ago, I don’t believe our cuisine and concept would have been accepted by the community.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with My Abuelas Food – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My Abuelas is a Puerto Rican Fonda inspired by the food, love, and comfort our Abuelas brought to our lives. It’s all about the full experience, the food, music, service, and space. As we love our staples, there is nothing more exciting than changing up the menu monthly, cooking up my favorite Puerto Rican Dishes. We teamed up with the best bakery in town La Dolce Madness, as a partnership, they make all the baked goods sold at My Abuelas Food. It is also their space, clients get to experience both worlds in one location.
Being able to provide a little taste of the Puerto Rican culture to our community is something that I could have never even dreamed about. It’s exciting to wake up every day and fuel the day with the energy my heritage has. We are currently the only restaurant in the city that focuses on traditional Puerto Rican cuisine. We hope to make our community proud!
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
Absolutely nothing, everything has it’s a journey. If things would have happened earlier, I don’t believe it would have been as exciting and life-changing.
