Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Legacy.
Luke, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I became interested in making music when my cousin moved from NY to ATL and he was a dancehall producer. My brother naturally got involved with my cousin making beats, and I would always hang around. I started trying to write music and rhymes. They told me I was really bad, but that made me want to be better. I always gauge my music and rapping on what they are saying. Then I started writing poetry. Writing poetry helped me to figure out how to rhyme. I also started performing at different open mic nights during my early teenage years. I remember still the first rap I ever wrote. That led me to making music with my best friend J Webb, who I still currently making music with.
We built a studio in his house, and for a couple of years, we tried to figure out studio equipment, production, stuff like that. Then I kind of gave up on music because I felt like I was too old, which was ridiculous because I was in my early twenties. Then I ran into Alex Acosta, a good friend of mine from high school at Space2 when I moved into the city. He told me he started a freestyle rap cypher called Soul Food Cypher. That pulled me back into music because I wanted to get good at freestyle rapping, but that also gave me an opportunity to learn from others. Through Soul Food Cypher, I began to perform at shows and host shows, and it really just spiraled me into a wide variety of things in music that I never thought I would be a part of.
While working with Soul Food Cypher, I also been working with my good friend Neion Deion. Deion and I decided to come out with a project together called Neon Legacy, which is available on Bandcamp. After that, I came out with more music around 2015. That project is called Happy Darkness, Quiet Truth and was released on Soundcloud. At that point, I started doing solo shows, mainly at Apache Café. It was interesting because I was asked to do acapella rhymes without a beat, and that led me to make another project in 2017 that I released on all major streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) – God Body, Neon Legend. That leads to today – I’m still performing and am currently working on a new project.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road mentally. I learned that I have to get out of my own way and avoid worrying about what society thinks, such as “you should stop making music”, “you’re too old to be doing this”, or “you should take life more seriously and stop chasing a dream”. Over time I’ve realized that I am living my dream and that everyone’s process for living their dream looks different.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Luke Legacy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Luke Legacy as a brand is a rapper, a host, a master of ceremonies, an interviewer, and the list goes on. I’m heavily involved in spreading hip hop culture to the youth by managing workshops at schools, which stemmed from my work with Kiddos Atlanta leading me to do work with Soul Food Cypher. I continuously make music and am involved in producing and collaborating with other artists.
I think I’m able to set myself apart by adopting qualities from each individual I come across and connect with in life. I try to figure out the great things that people give off and put them into myself and my artwork.
I’m most proud of my work with children. Kids are our future, and in this generation, we’re still able to have a strong connection with them because hip hop culture hasn’t died. The culture continues to grow, and as it grows, our generations grow together, and we learn to understand and appreciate the same things.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently investing my energy into opening an after-school program called “Decide”, which will focus on children merging their cognitive skills with creativity. I’m also working on releasing a new single in Summer 2019.
