Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyndell (Izzy) Campbell.
Lyndell, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My career in entertainment began as a singer/songwriter by way of Indianapolis over 17 years ago. At the time, I was determined to find myself, no matter what that looked like. Although I was new to the Indy scene, I stepped outside of my comfort zone and auditioned for American Idol, X-Factor, and America’s Got Talent and like all things that require commitment, it takes time to find out who you are before, during and after chasing dreams of being the best. No matter what you’re going after… the hunt teaches you a lot!
About five years ago, I was approached by a well-connected industry colleague who was approved to produce the theater version of, “The Color Purple.” She thought I’d be the perfect fit to play Harpo. This opportunity was presented to me three times and needless to say, she was right. I took the gig because clearly God and the Universe knew something that I didn’t. This meant that I needed to dig deeper and embrace talent within me that I wasn’t quite familiar with. I quickly fell in love with the theatre world along with acting because I never imagined being an actor, even though I’m a “character” all by myself. This lead to more opportunities in regards to acting, especially commercials with my agency Helen Wells. Empire TV show was shooting in Chicago and at the time I had no idea what it was but I love Chicago so I figured why not, let’s see what it’s about. I was an ongoing extra but worked my way into a role as Cookie and Lucious Lyons’ bodyguard. Four years later and 36K+ miles of commuting was life changing in more ways than one. I’ve never regretted taking that risk even thought one told me that 17 hour days were the norm. There were a few times when I, unfortunately, fell asleep on the road. Thankfully, I made it home safe each time, but while there, I actually learned a lot watching and observing everyone’s role. You learn so much more when you say less. I was soaking in the world of unfamiliarity as best I could because let’s face it I’m a kid from the “Bus Projects” from (my original home town) Benton Harbor, Michigan. I didn’t initially see this as a part of my dreams, so while I didn’t end up in an eternal ditch, it definitely showed me that God’s hand is on me more than I realized.
Eventually, I felt that my time was up in Indy and I moved to Atlanta with a hope and a prayer, with faith that God was dope enough to bless me here as long as I trusted him. The film industry is booming and before I even got to ATL, I was booked to be on two BET shows, “Boomerang” and “American Soul.” Since I already owned a popular social brand (Let’s Love by Lyndell) that inspires and promotes dialogue regarding love and relationships, I decided to expand and launch a t-shirt line. The shirts promote Black Love and celebrate Black women because in the words and truth of Malcolm X, “the most disrespected person in America” IS the Black woman. They are the most unprotected and neglected! I’m from the era where you protect, provide, keep safe, and equip your woman in the best way possible, that doesn’t take away from her being her independent self yet adds to her.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have not had the smooth road at all but what road is?..unless you’re going downhill lol. My struggles have been growing ones that’s for sure because it’s not an easy journey for anyone who wants it bad enough. If you know me, then you know the bull in me never quits or gives up.
Please tell us about Let’s Love by Lyndell – what should we know?
I specialize in reaching people where they are and embracing them. I aim to motivate and encourage people because, without people, you’ll fail if you just focus on profit. Therefore, I introduce you to my brand, Let’s Love! Additionally, I am still singing, performing and writing original music. Over 400 songs written so I’ve been extremely busy with my career while in Atlanta. I’m looking to book a huge role and become a household name like Will Smith or Tom Cruise.
I am most proud of my own perseverance in life. While I love to inspire and bring lighthearted energy to my following, most don’t know that I grew up in homeless shelters. This is why I’m so passionate about giving back and pouring into others. My charity “The Scarf and Glove Movement ” is all about assisting homeless people who are in a situation that seems hopeless. It’s a project that I don’t do for recognition at all or even tell people about. It’s just really close to my heart.
What set’s me apart is an aforementioned statement that’s true to me, its about people over profit. Nipsey said “find yo purpose or you wastin’ air”, and I’ve tapped into mine in more ways than one!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
