Meet Lyric Abbott of Visionary Palette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyric Abbott, The Owner Of Visionary palette.

Lyric, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was younger, I loved to draw and paint, it was an escape from reality. Growing up drawing and paint became harder because I have brachial plexus (Nerve Damage) in both arms causing pain during both activities. I was introduced to Graphic design during High school basically learning to draw/illustrate on the computer. Adobe software like photoshop played a big part in creating illustrations. Photoshop is such a large program with a lot to offer but how would I know if there was no one to give me a step-by-step tutorial. I turned to google for answers and ended with youtube tutorials. Youtube was the best teacher. Towards the end of high school, I was creating invitations and logos. During high school, I also took a coding class that sparked my interest developing websites. By graduation I knew I wanted to be a graphic & web designer, I even received an award for “Best Coder”. I applied for “Watkins College of Art & Design” and got in, I also received a grant from the recommendation letter my art teacher wrote for me.

During my college years, I really didn’t learn anything that I already knew before. They basically taught us how to work for corporate and how to work in groups. So never would I have thought I would own my own business. After graduating, it was extremely hard to find a job in my field. After completing 50 to 100 applications and the final decisions were basically the same “you don’t have any experience”. I never understood how Jobs would expect college graduates to have any experience after graduating college. We would need to get the job to have the experience. If they counted internships as experience, there need to be more internships available. After being turned down for the 100th time, I started to freelance. I started to freelancing in 2017. I created a logo, a business name and a website. I had no idea what I was doing or what I was getting myself into. As time went by, I learned more and created more. Within my first year, I made $5,000 – $6,000 a month. My clientele grew so I rebranded my business as an agency, that means a new logo, new website, more policies and a new goal for Visionary Palette.

At this time, I was never going back to a 9 to 5. My business was growing and I wanted to grow also, so I made enough to make a serious decision to buy a house in Atlanta. I didn’t move here to escape a problem because my generation loves to drop everything and move to Atlanta. I moved here because the majority of my clientele was from here so why not? From 2017 Visionary Palette has at least served 5,000 clients worldwide while specializing in branding and web design.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. When first starting out you do not know when you will receive your next order or client. It’s really hard when you don’t have a 9 to 5 to fall back on, so basically whatever you make from your business is the only money you have. After being in business for almost six years, I gained a solid and reliable clientele. But in 2020, a solid and reliable client did not matter during the pandemic. During the time everyone in the world had a major setback. As for the visionary palette, we did have a minor setback because at that time not everybody was thinking about a logo or website, they were more so thinking about their next meal or how will their bills will get paid. But we did have some people state to us they saw how having a 9 to 5 was somewhat scary because at that time some lost their jobs or couldn’t go to work, the world was shut down. So they wanted to start their own business with Visionary Palettes’s help. We didn’t give up, As a business owner you can’t give up every time there is a problem, the only way to get out of that problem is to keep going.
