Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie Williams.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
The Sercy Studio is a dream come true, but it didn’t happen overnight. After my first daughter was born, I decided not to return to my design job at a local architecture firm. But I knew I wanted to work! At the same time, my aunt was sick and received prayer beads. I loved the gesture and thought it could be expanded into a gift line. My aunt Ruth also used the term “sercy” to describe a little gift given for no reason except love. I created my own version of beads and eventually called them “blessing beads”. It was perfect because I have always been crafty, and I got to put my Fine Arts degree to use! Seven years later, The Sercy Studio has evolved and become much larger than I could have ever imagined. We sell blessing beads and other sercies online and in over 300 retailers across the country.
Please tell us about your art.
I make “blessing beads” which are a gift for many occasions. Think of them as jewelry for your home! We (my team and I) make each blessing bead strand by hand in our Atlanta studio. Lots of love and attention goes into each part of the beads. I hope that people feel loved when they receive our beads. Our customers give blessing beads to celebrate times of joy- weddings, new babies, graduation, mother’s day, etc. or to acknowledge people during times of suffering and loss. Our beads are beautiful and add a special touch to any home.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Start small! I started selling a few strands of beads out of my home. If you think too big at first, you will never get going. Just start, and you can evolve as the demand grows. I believe this helps greatly with the money aspect because you shouldn’t need much to get started small.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
