Today we’d like to introduce you to Madie Moore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Madie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
UGA HEROs is a student organization at The University of Georgia that strives to improve the quality of life for children infected or affected by HIV and AIDS in Georgia. We were started in 2003 by our founder Garrett Gravesen. We currently have around 1,500 members. All of our children come from the Atlanta area.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road. We, as students, have to raise money every year for our children to get to experience our programs. We do not have other chapters around the country if we do not fundraise enough our children suffer. We work everyday with our children at the forefront of our mind.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with UGA HEROs – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are an organization that strives to improve the quality of life for children infected or affected by HIV and AIDS in Georgia. Georgia currently has the 6th highest rate of pediatric AIDS in the country. We are the only organization striving to improve the quality of life for children infected or affected by HIV and AIDS. There are over 300 organizations that deal with HIV and AIDS, but we are only one striving for quality of life. Our programs range from many things such as kid events, camp, holiday gift, and transition to adulthood. Our Kid Events can range from basketball games to Funopolis- the goal is for children to be carefree and have fun. The camp we help send our kids to is called Camp High Five, It is a camp where every child is infected or affected by HIV and AIDS, a true stigma-free zone. For holiday gifts we give our children one gift they want and one gift they need.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As an organization, we are always looking, planning and changing, In the coming months, we are looking forward to being the beneficiary for Klassiko Music Festival, Action Cycling Field Day and Charity Bash in Atlanta. We are also looking forward to our Golf Tournament at Windermere Golf Course on May 13th. In our horizon things, we are planning our fall kid events and our Torch Walk. Our Torch walk is when as an organization walk from Atlanta to Athens in support of our children.
