Meet Daniquea Houston of Major Coins Apparel in Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniquea Houston.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Daniquea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Have you ever been, so hype to go to work on a Friday knowing it’s your payday? Welp! That was me. I worked at a collection agency getting paid hourly plus commission (only if you hit your goal for the month). I was so happy to walk through the doors because I just knew my check was fat. I clocked in for work and began to do my daily routines. Around 12 pm, it was time for all the supervisors to start passing out checks. So yes, I received mines and guess what? My face dropped.. So I’m thinking to myself how in the hell Am I missing almost 400- 500 dollars on my check. So I patiently waited for our director to come into work. Once he got settled, I went up on the deck to advise him of the situation and what had taken place. What really pisses me off is when you have work so hard for your money and when something is wrong, people act nonchalant or just act like their hearing you but ain’t really hearing you. I was told I would have to wait another two weeks for the rest of my money. I then began to feel like this was a joke. Despite what I already had going on outside of just work. I was consumed with a lot so the last thing I needed for was my check to be miscalculated. I was actually sent home the same day because I expressed my feelings about it and explained what all I had to accomplish. I went home and I started just thinking like damn man when is my struggle going to be over life ain’t easy and maybe I should have just listened to my parents. Every day was a struggle and I kept praying and asking GOD to show me the way. I knew then that a 9-5 wasn’t something I wanted for my life. I wanted something of my own. I wanted to be an inspiration to people through the struggles of what I was going through. So I thought of what can I do to motivate others as well as myself. A “clothing line” popped up in my head so I thought that was right down my alley. I had always been into fashion since I was in middle school, so I begin to start jotting down names of what my brand should be called. After five days of racking my brain, I knew I had finally picked one. Major Coins! I begin to research how to start a clothing line. I told my family about my plans but nobody seemed to take me seriously. The first thing I did was get my LLC then I patent my logo. I then knew I started a dream that can’t be stopped. So I got even more serious and I begin to put all my energy, time, dedication and money into something I created. Once my family saw what I had accomplished, they threw a release party for me on June 9th, 2018. That’s the day I revealed my brand to the world and that first night sold 75%. I knew it was only up from here. How I got where I am today is GOD first he gave me a vision and at the time, I didn’t see what it was until now but everything that I was going through the struggles, disappointments, the ups and downs only prepared me for my next season. I told myself no matter what happens, no matter what obstacles I face that may come along, I cannot stop. When you stop that’s when you fail but when you keep going, you become a winner! I always seen my parents struggle and I knew I wanted a better life for me as well as my family. I wanted to be the first to set the bar from my family and set an true example of following your dreams and never giving up ..

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road but really starting your own business shows you, who has your back and who don’t. When I started my brand, I asked GOD to reveal and show me the people who wasn’t for me. I begin to lose close friends, even started falling out with family members. I struggled mentally, I was confused on why people begin to leave my life but that was only confirmation from GOD letting me know that everybody won’t be able to go to that next level with you. Really just leaping out on faith and not having a team got overwhelming. Photoshoot was being paid, business fees was being paid, attorney fees was being paid, product had to be paid, advertisement fees was being paid, events was paid, website was being paid and so on and so forth. This wasn’t business loan money; this was from my actual paycheck. My car started giving me issues from driving 45 mins to an hour every day back and forth for the past three years to work. Bills begin to outweigh my check, tickets had to be paid, and regular adult bills that come along. My life still had to continue but I still kept pushing.
