Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Seymour.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Malik. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, it all started off in 9th grade when I threw my first party at my house on Halloween. After that, my name started to get a buzz, although I didn’t go by “LeekMadeIt,” yet I only had the name “Leek.” I began to start throwing parties with my group called “$olid Entertainment” at nightclubs and small venues such as Palace Nightclub located on Old National Hwy and Club Rain located on Ralph David Abernathy. After the Palace days was over, I started focusing on photography more and started doing prom shoots, behind the scenes, music video shoots and just taking pictures of my friends. People started reaching out and booking me, so I ran off with it, but I barely knew anything about cameras I was just taking pictures. While I started taking classes at The College Career Academy, they showed me a different way of being creative in my work.
Once I entered the 11th grade, my older friends started rapping but never had anybody to make their cover art. I remember the first cover I ever made it was for “Yung Bino” for his single “Long Live Fresh” everyone wanted to know who made his cover. He told them, “LeekMadeIt.” Although I still didn’t get the name just yet, I made the name up after just sitting in my house thinking of a new name to be called by other than “LeekWitDaCanon.” The end of 2018 my bruddas “TopNotchZion & “Young Deion” wanted to drop a collar tape together, Deion came to me in class and asked me about it I told him I could try to do it he sent me over probably 20 pictures to choose from the project I made for them was “Y.N.R.A.” After they dropped it, a lot of folks reached out to me to get their cover art made. I never knew how much to charge, so I started low, probably around $20 or $35. Months go by and I started to make covers I never thought I could make I knew this could make me some real money. I started to work with more and more people when I noticed I made over 200+ covers just under six months. After I graduated, a new opportunity came around to work with the platinum singer “Queen Naija” the cover I made for her was her new single called “Butterflies Pt.2”. Queen gave me a buzz for the city. I literally received over 50 clients the day she posted the cover I was shocked at just seeing that & I never knew how big of an artist she really was until after my friends told me who she really was.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some Obstacles that came my way during the party-throwing times was probably trying to get people out to a party for the first time at a nightclub. It only was 300 people but the place was big so it didn’t really look like a lot of people but they still enjoyed it. Graphic wise is when I’m under pressure and I have to make a cover for someone and they give me a hard concept to do but, I end up accomplishing to finish it for the client every time, no doubt.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I like best about our city is that we’re the best city to ever do it, music-wise and entertainment-wise also. It’s nothing really wrong with my city other than this virus stuff that’s about it.
