Meet Marcia Blane of Peculiar One Counseling & Consultant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Blane.

Marcia Blane

Hi Marcia, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
How did I start in the field of mental health?

My fascination with mental health ignited when I first encountered psychology and delved into the works of figures like Sigmund Freud during my junior year of high school. Exploring the intricacies of human behavior captivated me, prompting a deep dive into articles and books to pursue a richer understanding of mental health. This exploration ultimately paved the way for me to pursue a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) career.

How did I get here?

The journey to my current accomplishments began with adversity and resilience. Exiting college at 19 as a pregnant teenager and single mother, I faced significant challenges in rediscovering my identity. However, fueled by determination, I persevered, raising my children before returning to academia at 40. Achieving a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology & Human Services marked the first step in my professional journey.

Undeterred by time, I embarked on a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health, completing it within a commendable 3.5 years. Despite encountering obstacles in pursuing my doctoral degree, including a disagreement with my mentor, resulting in an incomplete dissertation, I refused to let setbacks define me. Instead, my practice, Peculiar One Counseling & Consultant, located in Jonesboro, GA, thrived, buoyed by word-of-mouth referrals.

Through my experiences, I’ve learned the invaluable lesson of resilience and the importance of perseverance. I’m a testament to the power of persistence, advocating for others to push forward despite challenges. My journey underscores the belief that with unwavering determination, success is attainable, regardless of the obstacles encountered along the way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth road? Ha! I don’t think such a thing exists. Every journey has its bumps, some more prominent than others. I’ve encountered setbacks on the path to establishing my private practice, writing books, launching my podcast, and initiating my annual empowerment conference.

I’ve experienced the loss of associates and the disappointment of insufficient support from those familiar with my journey. But instead of dwelling on these challenges, I chose to adjust my crown, figuratively speaking, and embrace my perseverance. Through this, I’ve realized that not everyone who seems to cheer loudly is genuinely supportive; some may even serve as distractions.

So, while the road may not have been smooth, navigating its twists and turns has taught me valuable lessons about determination and discernment.

Now in its third year, my podcast “Authentically Peculiar with Marcia” features interviews with phenomenal guests who provide valuable insights and suggestions to enrich the lives of our audience.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve never believed in a “self-made” person. Whether we are hurt by lessons and interactions or grow through them, there is always someone who helps us reach our potential. Without my mother, Juanita Blane, may she rest continuously in peace; I would not be the person of strength or wisdom I am. Without my children, I would not have the drive that I operate in, and without my grandchildren, I would not be forced to establish my legacy.

As a clinician, I have gleaned from others in the field who have pushed and encouraged me to reach beyond the stars. My clients continue to challenge me to be authentic as they journey to rewrite their narratives. I firmly believe that when you understand your purpose, your passion connects with your movement.
