Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Samuel.
Marcus, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A couple of months after being born in Orlando, FL December 21st 1986 me, my brother, and mother moved to Pensacola, Florida where I was raised in a single-parent household… My mother went through moments of hardship, raising me and my brother alone as a social worker… My grandmother did her best to take care of us while my mother would work during the day… I’ve never imagined having a career in the entertainment arts field although growing up fatherless caused me to look up to global figures specifically Rappers and NBA players… I think I naturally just migrated into living like them the best way I could with what I had… I suppose I lost myself naturally to only go on unraveling myself throughout the years of finding out who I am in this world… with no real stable male influence. After going to a bunch of different schools including a boarding school out in Mississippi called piney woods and back to Florida because my grades caused me to get sent home. I somehow managed to graduate high school and receive my high school diploma… Shortly after I moved to Atlanta, GA with my brother and mother. The city that opened up my eyes to endless possibilities, but a career in acting was so farfetched and never thought of. A plethora of trial and error life events led me into this great lifestyle. This great experience to be able to unite my life experiences onto an art platform we call acting for the world to view.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely been bumpy with lots of potholes, glass, and nails lol! I’ve actually been thinking about just pouring my own cement to smoothen the path. But that’s a thought seed I’m still watering. I’d say my greatest challenges would be the process of recreating myself. Eliminating my old habits that held me back. I still battle with them. I could make a bunch of excuses to why but I’d rather personally overcome my demons. I guess… but that’s been my biggest struggle. I think… I know… it also has a lot to do with just being around people… like-minded people… who want the same thing you want out of life… which has been the transition that feels like the biggest push and pull..
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m an actor to the world. I’m the most proud about just being alive. That’s an accomplishment I’m thankful for every day. It may sound cliché or whatever… but that means a lot to me. In the spiritual sense… Physically I’m very ecstatic about being able to be on television and act next to some of the greatest icons and artist today like Big Boi from Outkast and Queen Latifah on the TV show Star, Working with actor Will Catlett on black lightning was amazing… his advice and humbleness is something the world needs.. He’s definitely been chosen by God to produce great worldly art. Working with Brian Tyree on the hit TV show Atlanta was just surreal. The scene we did together was great and historical. Meeting Donald Glover was amazing… idk.. It’s just weird to me coming from a small city like Pensacola, Florida… to being on a Global TV show and Donald Glover telling me how authentic and real my acting was… It just confirms to me who I know I’m meant to be in this world. Affirmations is confirmation. I’m excited about what the future holds for me… no matter how long it takes, I’m so grateful.
What sets me apart?? Gooooddddd question.. I’d say my purpose. My purpose is tailor-made for me and we all have something different to offer to the world… Guess you all have to stay tuned to my journey. 😉
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I’d have to say family time… My family is spread out and not as close emotionally and physically as I wish they were. But the best times of my childhood were the couple of family get-togethers/ family reunions we did have. That’s something I really look forward to the future for. I’ve always had the thought that I’d be the one to bring everyone back together, that’s a dream of mine.
