Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Smith.
Marcus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was an emergency and critical care veterinarian for 8 years before purchasing Chattahoochee Animal Clinic. This company started with a small crew of 6 employees, 1 veterinarian, and the basic practice of veterinary medicine. My goals were to transform a basic practice into a state of the art veterinary hospital that offers all spectrums of medicine and surgery with second to none customer service. Always make the client feel as if they are family is our team mantra. Over the past several years, at times we feel as if we are an urgent care. We never turn anyone away with a sick animal and always spend the time with our clients to ensure that they fully understand the process. I believe this is what has made us successful. Now we are a two-doctor practice with 14 employees. However, we still practice the same beliefs…clients and patients come first, always.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The hardest part along the road is actually the growth. They do not train veterinarians to be business managers and people managers, so it has been a learn as you go. However, when you surround yourself with a strong team, it can allow you to conquer most problems.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Chattahoochee Animal Clinic story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a general veterinary practice that offers preventative medicine, surgery, ultrasound, dentistry, oncology and chemotherapy, and emergency medicine. There is not much that we cannot handle due to my critical care background. We are known for our advanced medical care and customer service. Every patient and client is treated as family. I am most proud of my staff keeping to our simple mission as Roswell’s veterinarian…provide the best possible medicine, while ensuring that the pet owner leaves with a full understanding of their pet’s overall health status. What sets us apart is our commitment to the client. Your sick pet will never be turned away, no matter how insane the day may be.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
None. Luck can play a role in timing of certain businesses, but in the veterinary field it comes down to your commitment to the craft.
