Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Hendryx.
Marcy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After being in the video production industry for several years, I joined the team at Georgia Aquarium in 2018 as Production Supervisor. I graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a degree in Digital Filmmaking and Video Production back in 2010 and got my start working for CBS 46 on the Better Mornings Atlanta show. For the next few years after that, I worked my way up from Editor to Senior Producer at LionStar Films. There I worked on producing local TV shows, corporate communications videos, commercials and more! I had a lot of great exposure working on a variety of projects and managing everything from script to screen. All of that molded me into the person I am today and made me fully prepared to swim with the ‘big fish’ here are Georgia Aquarium.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think that anyone can say their career path has been totally smooth. I had been lucky to keep the same job for almost seven years so the idea of leaving that company to potentially go out on my own and start freelancing was a huge transition for me. I was so comfortable in my career that I knew I needed a change and the opportunity to grow and change. That part is the hard part. Stepping out of your comfort zone for a high-strung planner like me that loves to have every step mapped out was difficult to do. I committed and left LionStar Films.. It was a huge leap but I have never been happier! Leaving the career, people, and relationships I loved only opened me up for more opportunities!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Georgia Aquarium – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Working at Georgia Aquarium is a dream job. I know people say that a lot, but it truly is. I get to work in the video production world that I’m used to and use the knowledge that I’ve gained over the past years all while being at the country’s largest Aquarium. I have always loved animals and visited Georgia Aquarium often with my husband so when the opportunity arose, I jumped on it! I’m now the Production Supervisor at Georgia Aquarium.
Being the Production Supervisor I act as a liaison and handle all of the filming requests beginning to end. I make sure that everyone understands the mission of the Georgia Aquarium and work with our internal teams to ensure the production is right for us and goes as planned.
Since the Aquarium has so many moving parts there is a lot of scheduling and finesse involved with all the different teams to make sure a production goes off smoothly and everyone is happy with the end product. The animals are the number one priority so we always make sure that they are unaffected by any production. The Aquarium is always growing and changing and they realize the importance of sharing all the great things that they have to offer with the world through the lens of a camera!
I’m so proud to be able to facilitate our message through production! We’re open to not just movies but commercials, television shows, as well as still photography.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are just to keep growing at Georgia Aquarium. I hope to be able to spread the amazing message about the conservation and research that we do here through different productions. I would love to be able to have a few movies film here in the next year and continue to push Georgia Aquarium as a filming destination!
