Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Flock
Hi Margaret, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I was an avid cross country runner, all the way from 2nd -11th grade. In high school, I was one of the top runners in my division, though I was getting burnt out from constantly pushing my body past my limit. I started to feel like exercise should be fun and that we shouldn’t have to force ourselves to do it. I stopped running and finally stepped into my first yoga class. I was hooked from the start. I found a new way to strengthen the body and calm the mind by synching the breath to the movements. Now I see exercise as a fusion of the body, the mind, and the spirit.
For me, yoga became a way to connect with myself and strengthen my intuition. Then, in 2017, my intuition told me to share my love of yoga with the world and get my certification. Now I help others find this same freedom in their bodies that I have discovered through yoga. I teach yoga privately, to corporate employees and at senior living facilities. I am looking forward to creating more workshops and events in the near future!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After college, I worked in the film industry as a costumer for 6 years in leadership roles on big budget productions. I was working long hours and wasn’t able to take care of my health 100%. I finally let go of costuming and it was a giant leap of faith. I was always told that it’s challenging to make a living teaching yoga, so I avoided this path for some time, but in the back of my mind I always wondered what it would be like to make the switch.
It was not an easy transition, but the one thing I learned along the way is that if you are sharing your passion with the world, you CANNOT fail. Because the world needs us to share our passions with each other, which is what makes this world such a beautiful place. I have learned that when you stay strong with your faith in something higher than yourself, you will somehow find a way to keep pushing through any obstacle that may come into your path. And if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will eventually get where you need to go.
My work in the film industry isn’t over – I have shifted my focus on building my acting career. It’s a dual path – with acting and yoga. I see both passions complementing each other in unique ways. Yoga helps me physically express myself, which is the cornerstone of acting. When I free my body, I am freeing my mind which helps me to express myself in the context of a character. This is what I really wanted all along.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in slow flow yoga. It can be challenging to find these practices inside a studio setting, as many classes are catered to workout style flows in hot rooms. While these classes can be fun to teach and are a great workout, I really love teaching the more meditative style of a slow flow.
During a slow flow practice, we are still doing challenging poses, but at a much slower pace, which makes it much more meditative and helps us really explore our own personal sense of alignment. I have found that this style helps me feel more in touch with my body, and my students have had similar experiences as well.
Slow flow is also great for beginners since we are taking things slowly to learn alignment and really get in touch with our bodies. I teach gentle flow as well, which is an even easier, slow paced class.
Last year, I got certified in yin, which is very different than a movement style class. We practice long-held, deep stretches that helps us get into our connective tissues to release blockages and strengthen our joints. This is great to add in for a well-rounded exercise routine.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I find happiness when I find myself fully able to live in the moment. Getting into “the moment” can seem like a challenge at first, but I believe it’s all about checking in with your five senses and getting comfortable with what you are experiencing now. This involves switching perspectives and seeing everything through the lens of gratitude and appreciation.
