Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Resuta.
Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Urban Tree Cidery was a concept born one day over morning coffee between my husband Tim and I. We had recently come home from California wine country with thoughts of opening a winery in the future. Tim had been making both wine and cider in our basement for years and was quite good at his “hobby”– we quickly turned our attention away from wine and to the abundance of apples in the North Georgia mountains and the lack of cider coming out of those orchards. We realized the opportunity in creating a Georgia grown craft product and bringing that product to the great people of the city of Atlanta. It ultimately took over 5 years to get from initial concept to where we are today — Atlanta’s First Cidery®!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
From initial concept to today has been anything but easy! Being the first of anything has so many advantages — but also comes with many challenges. Licensing, permitting, brand identity, — but most important, I feel, is consumer education to what cider really is and that it is not supposed to be “syrupy sweet” like many of the mainstream ciders.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Urban Tree Cidery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Urban Tree Cidery is a manufacturing facility with tasting room in West Midtown. Our fruit comes directly from our orchards in the North Georgia mountains. We farm, hand harvest and hand press all of the apples and then transport the juice from North Georgia to our facility on Howell Mill Road. We currently produce three flagship ciders — Original (traditional English style cider), Classic (a semi-sweet cider) and Barrel Aged (single variety apple fermented in Nicaraguan Rum barrels).
We are the first of our kind in the city and we are very proud of the handcrafted, quality product that we make. We have only been producing ciders for a little over a year but have already won several medals on both a National and Regional level for outstanding ciders.
Cider is the fastest growing segment within the alcohol industry currently. Due to the fact that it is a gluten free, all natural product it will continue to gain popularity and awareness. We see this industry growing substantially in the next 5-10 years as will we.
