Meet Marietta Creative Artist: Ciera Tabor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciera Tabor.

Ciera, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been a fan of art and make-up as a child, drawing and coloring in my coloring books was one thing that I absolutely loved! Once I graduated from high school in 2003, I attended massage therapy school, a few months into the course I realized that this career field was not my calling, so I quit. Thereafter I worked in retail for a few years, then attended a cosmetology school in 2007 where I enrolled in the Aesthetics program with the intentions of learning more about makeup. Sad to say, I didn’t learn a lot at all. Huge disappointment.

After graduating, I took it upon myself to teach myself what I needed to know by purchasing make-up books at Barnes and Noble and watching other artists on youtube (this was before youtube became really popular). That same year I graduated, I moved to the beautiful state of Florida where I assumed my esthetician license would get me a job with no problem. Boy, was I in for a rude awakening. I applied to many hotels, interviewed, got the job and was told someone would call me to go over my schedule and that never happened. I was tired of the lies and disappointments, so I took it upon myself to go into business for myself and focus more on the makeup side of things. The start was rough, I was new to Florida and didn’t know anyone. During my stay in Fort Lauderdale, Florida I lived in an apartment with a friend for a few years, we were then served with foreclosure papers and was told that we needed to make moving arrangements because the owner hasn’t been paying on their property.

I moved to Miami and within a few months of being in my apartment the same foreclosure madness happened. In the year 2010, I moved back home with my mom for two years. I continued my makeup business in addition to working with MAC Cosmetics. I knew that Colorado was not the place for me or my business so I headed to Georgia being that a had a lot of people that inquired my services. I felt good about this move and decided to give it go. I now reside in Marietta, Georgia and moving here has been a great accomplishment because I have been able to meet lots of different people, grow as an artist and my business has grown a great deal. I’m not exactly where I want to be at the moment but looking back on how far I’ve come, I am grateful for where I am now.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I grew up an only child, although I have two brothers, same dad different moms. Being that all the boys in my family were my age I spent more time with the boys doing boy stuff. I must say that I was a girlie-tomboy growing up. I had a bold and leadership-oriented personality.

My dad had married and my step mom who wore makeup and I would always get a hold of her make-up, applying lipstick to my lips and eyeliner to my water line. I thought I was too cute. I’ll never forget going home with that make-up on my face and my mother was not having it. Lets just say, I was in deep trouble. I never wore make-up again, well in my mother’s presence. My dad didn’t mind it but he made sure that I took it off before going back home. Dad’s house was where my interest in make-up started and has become a huge part of my life.

Even though I was an only child, I was never selfish. I was always genuine and I cared for everyone. I was that friend you would call on for help or just simple girl talk conversations. I loved to dance! I would create a choreographed dance to my favorite songs and then teach my younger cousins and friends what I’ve come up with. We would perform at high school talent shows and festival events.

I ran track as well, from 8 years of age until I was 18 years old. I practiced and competed year round (with no breaks). I managed and learned how to eat well at a young age. Our activities consist of lifting weights and doing drills on Mondays and Fridays. At the age of 12 I was lifting more than hundred pounds. Tuesdays we would do other activity drills and lots of crunches etc, Wednesday’s we ran and did lounges up ruby hill. Ruby hill was the hill from hell, the hill that was super steep and never ending. Thursdays were swim days, The coach would have us swim back and forth until he told us to stop. With that said, my mother and father made sure that they kept me busy with school, track practices and summer camps.

I loved arts and crafts and I still do. I’m very creative with my hands and I love turning something into something better. I start taking hoop earrings and decorating them with accent pieces, beads or whatever comes to mind. Jewelry making is something that comes and goes for me, but when I do create pieces I never have a problem with selling them because they are so unique and flashy.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
I had an awesome childhood. From taking trips to Disney land, Hawaii, block birthday parties, attending concerts etc, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. My mother was freakin’ awesome!! She made sure that things were taking care of so that I can have a better childhood than what she was given after her Mother passed away at a young age.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
I’m looking to open up my own place of business or booth (at the mall) where women can come get their make-up done and purchase make-up. I’d love to open up a bunch of different shops in different states and countries. I’m looking forward to having my own line of cosmetics… I’m working on a few things as we speak and I hope to launch a few items by next year sometime.
