Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Chapman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a Registered Nurse with multiple specialty credentials for over 30 years. Prior to joining Medway, I worked at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta for 13 years. In that capacity, I participated in multiple patient transfers with Medway Air Ambulance. I was recruited to join Medway by the Company’s founder, and I have since risen to become the Company’s Program Director. In this capacity, I’m responsible for all sales, and I also oversee the Chief Flight Nurse and medical teams who report directly to me. I still participate in complex neo-natal medical transports because I love the job and find transporting sick children to be especially fulfilling.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every business has its challenges. We’ve been through periods where we had a shortage of pilots and we’ve been through periods where our sales people were each working over 400 hours per month. Our new owners have given us all the resources necessary to improve our 0perations and avoid these issues going forward. Throughout all the growing pains, the mission has always been incredibly fulfilling and we’ve always put our patients and safety first having never had an accident or malpractice claim in over 20 years.
Medway Air Ambulance – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Medway is a fixed-wing air ambulance provider. We fly critical, but stable, patient’s long distances when ground transportation or commercial aviation is not an option. We have been in business over 20 years, and we are one of the largest fixed wing air ambulance operators in the country. We own and operate all of our own aircraft and our pilots and nurses are Medway employees – they are not contract employees. We are known for our high level of care, highly affordable in-network insurance pricing model, and willingness to go anywhere at any time. We are most proud of our safety record having never experienced an accident or malpractice claim. The industry has a bit of a reputation for charging exorbitant prices to customers, and Medway does not operate in this manner.
We think we are the most affordable option for fixed-wing air ambulance transport and customers are never surprised by our bills. They know exactly what they will pay for before the flight ever takes off.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I measure our success daily based on customer feedback. We are dealing with families at a critical stage. It’s important to show empathy and operate with both professionalism and kindness. When we do our job right, I hear it directly from the patients and their families.
I judge my own success by the successes of the people that work for me. We have a young sales team, and I know I’m doing my job when they are successful in theirs. We also have an ownership group with high expectations for growth. I measure our sales numbers against their expectations daily, and it’s a clear indicator of success or failure.
