Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlissa Mubarik
Hi Marlissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hey, I’m Marlissa Mubarik, an 18-year-old freshman at Fort Valley State University and a hairstylist based in Atlanta. I’ve had a passion for hair since I was young. My mom would buy me mannequins and Barbie dolls, I was always eager to style their hair. My dad also introduced entrepreneurship onto me at a young age, he owned a food truck, and his work ethic inspired me to adopt a similar mindset. In 6th grade, my hairstylist unexpectedly canceled my hair appointment, so I decided to braid my own hair, with some help from YouTube. The style turned out really cute for an 11-year-old, and from that point on, I started braiding my own hair and experimenting with new styles. In 2020, during my first year of high school, I began doing hair for others like family and students from school. It was a big transition since I was only used to styling my own hair. As I gained more clients and exposure , I created a business page, “Styled By Mimi,” and now here I am. Definitely grateful for how far I’ve come. Im extremely blessed , all glory to God!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t characterize it as necessarily hard. Everyone faces trials and tribulations. One significant challenge I encountered was the transition to high school in early 2021, when I lost my dad, who was my biggest supporter. The loss of my father made it difficult to maintain my motivation and focus, but I persevered, knowing it would be worthwhile in the end.
Another challenge I’m currently navigating is finding a balance between my commitments to my home clients and school clients. This involves a lot of traveling back and forth to support my loyal clientele. Therefore, my primary focus is to achieve balance between my academic responsibilities and my business goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Atlanta stylist specializing in braids, wig installs, ponytails, quick weaves, and locs. With a reputation for my braids and weaves. I take pride in transitioning to college while also continuing to successfully grow my clientele in a new environment. What sets me apart from others is my dedication to my craft; I strive to provide an experience for my clients. I put love and effort into every service, as I believe in creating quality results rather than treating my business as a get-rich-quick scheme.
Any big plans?
One of my future plans is to open a suite shop that accommodates young Black entrepreneurs, such as tattoo artists, hairstylists, makeup artists, nail technicians and others.
