Hi Marnay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story began as a college student who couldn’t always afford professional self-care experiences like getting my makeup done. Instead of seeing that as a limitation, I took the initiative to learn how to do my own makeup. As I practiced, I fell in love not just with the artistry, but with how it made me feel, more confident, empowered, and expressive.
Wanting to share that feeling with others, I started practicing on friends, refining my skills, and learning through hands-on experience. Over time, that passion turned into purpose, and I began working with clients, helping them feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. What started as a personal solution grew into a creative outlet and a business rooted in empowerment, self-care, and confidence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was balancing school, a part-time job, and building my makeup business at the same time. Finding time and energy to consistently practice, promote myself, and take clients was difficult.
Another major struggle was gaining clients and earning people’s trust, especially in the beginning. Convincing others to let me practice on them and believe in my skills before I had an established portfolio was challenging. However, those obstacles pushed me to stay consistent, improve my craft, and build confidence in both my abilities and my brand. Over time, that persistence helped me grow and gain credibility.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist who specializes in soft glam and natural makeup looks that enhance, rather than mask, my clients’ natural features. My work focuses on creating looks that feel effortless, polished, and true to each individual, which has helped me build trust and lasting relationships with my clients.
I am most proud of my consistency. Building this brand while balancing school and work was challenging, but I remained committed to growing my skills and showing up for my clients. What truly sets me apart is my ability to connect with the community I serve—college students. Because I am part of that same environment, I understand their needs, budgets, and lifestyles, allowing me to create a comfortable, relatable, and empowering experience that goes beyond just makeup.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would especially like to give credit to my mom, who has been one of my biggest supporters from the very beginning. She invested in my business early on, both financially and emotionally, by helping me purchase supplies and paying for me to take several makeup classes. Her belief in me gave me the confidence and resources to take my passion seriously and continue growing, even during challenging moments.
I also want to acknowledge everyone who trusted me enough to let me practice on them, especially my friends. Their willingness to support me, sit in my chair, and spread the word helped me build experience, confidence, and a strong foundation. Their support played a major role in turning my passion into something real and sustainable.
