Today we’d like to introduce you to Martinus Settles.
Martinus, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started while lip syncing to a Jackson’s 5 record,while performing in a Jackson 5 cover music group as a 10 year old. It was shortly after I discovered my passion for entertaining the crowd. I began to record hip-hop songs at local studios in my hometown of Knoxville, TN. I then discovered that I wanted to “stand out” as a music artist. I begin to utilize my writing gifts to compete with other peers in school. I also begin moving around my city in mostly all of the local talent and entertainment shows. This activity caught the eye of local entertainment figures.
As I grew older,I sacrificed and stayed true to my passion,my words,my music. I recorded albums and performed in different states,making my name known to many people and gaining true followers along the way. I caught the ears of the super hip-hop music group, BONE THUGS N HARMONY. I relocated to California with the group,and begin to make my presence known amongst new music lovers. I gained more knowledge of the music industry while traveling with the group. I then set off back south to form my own record label,Day 1 Music Group.
I begin to develop other local talent and provide opportunity for them to present their gifts to the world. This bought me lots of joy as I continued to mature in the music industry. I learned to begin to utilize my gifts and talents to promote more positivity to my listeners. This inspired me to begin writing my latest release, Grown Man Season. The name speaks for itself and describes my transition as a music talent. This transition also inspired me to begin my organization, The Change Campaign, where I help assist with providing the spiritual, physical, emotional and financial needs of any individual that seeks a positive change in their life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. There have been many obstacles along the way. I had to sacrifice so many things to keep focused on my purpose in life. I have seen so many people in my field give up due to financial lack or just plain discouragement.
I had to learn to “go with the flow” and know that purpose is not always tied to financial wealth. I had to keep on promoting and working for that purpose even when everything didn’t look so good or promising. I had to keep my mind focused on my gifts of music and words and be just satisfied with that at times.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Day 1 Music Group – what should we know?
I am 5ive Ft Giant, the owner of Day 1 Music Group. I specialize in gathering others with the gift and passion for music like myself. I specialize in producing entertainment for people’s soul and ears. I specialize in being the voice for men and women that have overcome trials and have not been fortunate enough to grow up in such a “peachy” path.
I give music and words to the world that entertain, teach, inspire and encourage the “everyday working class, business owners, homeless, etc.”I am proud of getting my organization, The Change Campaign, off of the ground, so that I can help others in more ways than music. I am set apart because I don’t use my “rap” talent to promote negativity or to worsen an individual’s condition. I like to be able to think more on how my music will affect a person.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that my strength and character as a leader has been very helpful in my success. A leader is one who don’t follow the trends or crowds.He/she strives to lead the crowd in the proper direction. I have used that ability to help me not to fall into the “hole” that most hip-hop artists have begun to fall into.
