Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Mayer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Six year’s ago I fell in love with Milton’s historic Crabapple Corners with the initial hope of planting a farmers market supporting the area’s producers. I heard a small but powerful voice say “Sell Cheese” and an everyday farmers market and cheese shop was born in the back of The Broadwell Cottage.
Broadwell Cottage owner, Jody Green, gave me the encouragement and knowledge I needed to launch Cheeses & Mary. Growth takes us in many directions, I moved to a larger space with 2 other businesses, Hello Lovely, a ladies boutique, and Blencoe & Co Photographic Arts and Jody found a new home, Church St. Cottage Boutique in Alpharetta.
I believe that business should be a community-minded experience and Cheeses & Mary seeks to partner with our producers, customers, area businesses and organizations to bring the best we all have to offer to your home.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I love this question! When is life ever a smooth road? The biggest challenge I faced was believing that I could turn this business into something more than a passion. I am still traveling that road but each day brings a new confidence and a new face lighting up behind the counter and sharing my excitement over some crazy new pairing idea. That joy is my fuel for the journey.

Cheeses & Mary offers a small but carefully curated selection of Artisan Cheeses, Jams, meats, and other accouterment. Our first love is the cheese plate, creating that special canvas of localiciousness by pairing our cheeses with items from the garden and our shelves. Georgia-made is our focus and our “A Taste of Georgia” gift boxes make for the perfect Corporate Thank you gift, Realtor closing gift, and Every Reason gift!
My favorite quote is “Cheese is the soul of the soil. It is the purest and most romantic link between humans and the earth.” Pierre Androuet. Celebrating that link and honoring the craftsmanship of our producers is what we are all about. Offering an experience and not just a purchase is our goal. We want you to leave our shop with a product that you love and a story to share.
What were you like growing up?
I just watched the Sound of Music with my 92-year-old Mom and I think the character of Maria sums me up! I was always in trouble, always zigging when I should have been zagging but once an idea found its way into my bonnet, my determination and confidence provided enough noise to drown out the voices of folks who follow a straighter path.
