Meet Matthew Gregory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Gregory.

Matthew Gregory, also known as “Lord Famous,” is a well versed Disk Jock who was born and raised on the small, but big island of Jamaica, who currently lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I fell in love with the craft after listening to quite a number of mixtapes from the local Disk Jocks and then decided that I wanted to make my own. In 2010, DJing began as a mere hobby for me until I was constantly encouraged to perform at parties by my friends. I finally took their advice and went on to gain nine years of experience in the business.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Being a Disk Jock is my form of art, it is my passion, it’s something I can’t stay away from even though it comes with a lot of stress. My craft is more than just playing music. I use my skill of manipulating music to create a sense of euphoria for the people I’m performing for and to put them in an unforgettable frenzy. Why you say? Just watching people dance and enjoy themselves makes me feel very content and happy with myself. They love music, and I love playing music.

How do I do it? I ask myself this all the time because I still have some ounce of fear before any event, even though I practice day in, day out religiously.

Even though being DeeJay has its perks, there is a lot behind the scenes work that we do, stemming from sleepless nights researching, collecting and experimenting with new music, to investing your last dime into a pair of headphones or turntables. There are also going to be times where you’ll come to a “writer’s block” when searching for some inspiration to create a mind-blowing set, or all your equipment fails, and you have to start all over.

In the end, being a Disk Jock is awesome, but takes a lot of sacrificed time and hard work to gain success.

Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I believe the role of Deejays has changed drastically. Back in the day, DeeJays were just Deejays, the person responsible for playing the music. Now the DeeJay has been a promoter for the event, they have to be producing their own music, and they have to be social media stars. The times have really changed.

Local and International events have a slight effect on my art due to cultural differences. I can’t necessarily play the same as I would in Jamaica, for people in a New York City nightclub. While I can and will use my unique playing style, I must adapt to the difference in crowd type to give an exceptional performance.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
