Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Hudson.
Hi Matthew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a bit of a late bloomer. I was very shy growing up and wasn’t involved in much of anything, so its still fascinates me that I’m on stage performing in front of people. That’s wild.
I come from a family full of creatives and entertainers. My brothers were viral before it was a “thing.” College is where I really came out of my shell. My peers were constantly calling me funny, crazy, silly, etc. Shortly after college, I began to do Instagram videos here and there. I began hosting our young adult ministry and I fell in love with it. In 2014, I began posting video sketches via Instagram regularly and my following started to grow. Talking about Jesus and making people laugh are the two things I enjoy the most, so I made this the focal point of my comedy. I wanted to people to see Jesus through humor, somehow.
Over the years, I’ve had opportunities to perform stand up, host different events, act and even put together my own show. It has definitely been a journey but looking back on it all, I can see that the Lord was always with me. In 2020, I created Laugh Because God is Good. Laugh because God is Good was created with a simple idea in mind, to provide a good reason to laugh. In Psalm 126, you see the goodness of God on display and the response from the people was laughter. It was a laughter that glorified God in such a way that people unfamiliar with Him took notice. We, at laugh because God is Good, want people to experience laughter that speaks to the goodness of God, which in turn creates opportunities for us as believers to share the Good News.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pursuing something you love isn’t easy. My biggest issue has been fear. Today, I am the most confident I’ve ever been in my life because I’m convinced that I am going the direction the Lord has called me. For much of my life, in most areas in my life, I’ve allowed fear to dictate my decision-making. Unbelief that God would be good to me was crippling and I missed a lot of opportunities. I had a community of people around me encouraging me, telling me that I had the juice but fear was louder, more convincing and it made me feel more comfortable.
Fear is still persistent but I’m better about how I deal with it when it comes.
I’ve learned that simply beholding Christ does wonders for an anxious and fearful heart. The only way to know that He is for you is to spend time with Him. Take a step in faith and God will meet you on the other side.
Remembering God’s faithfulness is vital. God is predictable. He works in mysterious ways but He is predictable because He will save every time. When I’m fearful, I’m reminded that Jesus has saved me and will save. On the days I struggle remembering His faithfulness, I lean on a friend to remind me. There are so many days like this.
Lastly, I’ve made many decisions out of fear which ultimately leaves me hurt because I didn’t get the outcome I desired. God simply said to me, “You make these decisions because you don’t believe that I’m good.” A heart that knows Jesus is Good is a heart at peace.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a comedian, actor, director, and content creator and I’m the creator of Laugh because God is Good. I’m most known for my comedy sketches via social media. Most recently, the “Christian Relationships be like…. Series” with Whitney Davis (@justwhiti) has really gained a lot of attention. This series has been my most popular work to date.
February 11 was a proud day for me. I put together my 2nd live comedy show. It was a sold out show and huge success.
Jesus is very exclusive. To follow Him is know I can’t do things my way. I can’t create the way I want. I aim to follow the Spirit and create from there. That’s what sets me apart. I want people to see Jesus and laugh at the same time. Laughter and the church hasn’t always mixed. I want to change that.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the Christian culture in ATL. It’s definitely one of a kind. I’ve visited other states and when I talk to them about the Christian culture in Atlanta most people are in awe. This is motivating because I feel God is using me in some way to unite the body of Christ through laughter.
