Meet Matthew Montgomery of Atlanta, GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Montgomery.

Hi Matthew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I loved writing stories about just about anything. I was constantly on my computer coming up with characters, plots, and ideas, just writing for the fun of it. It never felt like work; it was just something I naturally gravitated toward and couldn’t stop doing.

As I got older, that love of writing evolved into a deeper interest in storytelling, especially for film and television. I became fascinated by how stories are structured, how characters grow, and how dialogue and visuals work together on screen. A lot of my early learning came from experimenting, studying what I loved to watch, and figuring things out through trial and error.

Over time, I started taking my work more seriously, focusing on developing stronger characters and more intentional stories. Today, I’m continuing to grow as a writer and screenwriter, building projects that reflect my voice and the kinds of stories I’m most excited to tell. It’s been a very organic, self-driven journey, and I’m excited to see where it leads next.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot of it was figuring things out as I went, without really knowing if I was doing things “the right way.” There was a lot of trial and error, and a lot of moments where it felt like progress was slow or unclear.

I’ve also dealt with self-doubt and frustration, especially when projects didn’t turn out the way I hoped or when it felt like I was putting in a lot of work without immediate results. Learning to stay motivated and keep going anyway was a big challenge.

But honestly, those struggles were a huge part of the process. They pushed me to improve, get more patient, and really figure out what kind of writer I want to be. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade that part of the journey, because it shaped how I approach storytelling now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in writing and storytelling, with a focus on screenwriting for film and television. I specialize in writing screenplays and stories about things I’m genuinely passionate about, especially character-driven ideas that feel personal and meaningful.

What sets me apart is that I’m autistic, and that strongly shapes how I approach storytelling. I tend to think deeply and focus intensely on the details, how characters think, how worlds function, and how everything fits together. When I connect with a project, I fully commit to it and keep refining it until it feels right.

I earned my M.A. in Film and Television from the Savannah College of Art and Design, which helped me sharpen my craft and better understand both the creative and technical sides of screen-based storytelling. I’m most proud of how I’ve continued to grow, trust my voice, and lean into the perspective I bring to my work.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, my goal is to become a showrunner and create my own television series. I’m actively working toward that by developing original projects and building the skills required for long-term, character-driven storytelling in film and TV.

I’ve already taken concrete steps in that direction by creating a pitch deck for one of my classes at SCAD and continuing to refine it beyond the classroom with the intention of pitching it to studios like Netflix and Prime Video. Taking a project from an academic setting and shaping it into something industry-ready has been an exciting and validating process.

I’m focused on continuing to write, refine my voice, and develop strong, original concepts while looking for opportunities to collaborate and grow. I’m confident in the direction I’m heading and excited about building a career that allows me to bring meaningful stories to life on a larger scale.
