Today we’d like to introduce you to Mave.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got my professional start as a music producer back home in Chicago, where my cousin Syleena Johnson (R&B singer/TV personality) introduced me to a producer by the name Toxic (Multi-platinum producer). From there on, my professional career was solidified. Together we scored music with Keyshia Cole, Tank, Twista, Syleena, Faith Evans and more. My background has always been full with music and creation. I grew up watching my dad build his recording studio from the ground up, seeing my uncle Syl on Soul Train and seeing my cousin rise with the best in entertainment. MaveMuzik was formed in ATL once I became independent from the production team. MaveMuzik is comprised of producers and associated writers on one side and DJ and venue planning on the other.
Over the years, my relationships in the industry – good or bad – have helped point me in the direction for success. As a grammy nominated producer, I use those relationships and associations to build my own artists. All of this I did while working full time as a Securities licensed Private Client Banker. What I learned in the world of finance and from my mentors in music motivated me to take the leap of faith and run MaveMuzik, LLC, full time. This is just the beginning. This pandemic has not only halted my business but the whole world. I’m up for the challenge.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. I had a few bad deals in the beginning. It put a bad taste in my mouth for a long time. I never stepped out of the music world completely but I took my head above water a bit when I started with JPMorgan Chase. I’m sure some would disagree but personally, I always felt that the work I did in music while I was in the corporate world wasn’t enough and pushed me behind a bit. Catching up is and was a bit scary. In this business, it’s out of sight – out of mind. So rebuilding my network has been an obstacle interesting in this ever-changing business. Once I gathered the courage to bet on me and leave JPMorgan, a month later was the beginning of a pandemic and the whole world stopped. As a DJ, it has been fun infiltrating that network but this pandemic has created a unique obstacle.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a lead music producer for MaveMuzik, LLC. I specialize in music production, which is what I’m known for – the grammy nominated producer. Like most production houses, we partner with other producers, writers, and creatives to cook up music for your favorite artists and/or the favorites of the future. I have always had a good ear for music so its not surprising that DJing became a part of the MaveMuzik brand. I didn’t start out as a DJ but once I picked it up I realized I actually started falling in love with it. At first, to keep it separate from the producer brand, I created a moniker MXXMVN (mix maven) but today, I can say I have the first DJ signed to MaveMuzik – myself. Venue planning is a fairly new arm; however, it is geared toward shining a light on the new artist on the verge. I’m proud to see those close to me be inspired by the moves I’m making. I am never satisfied with normalcy and I think it rubs off on others.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being nominated for a Grammy in the best R&B album category. More to come.
