Meet Megan Armstrong of STAT Wellness in West Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Armstrong.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Upstate, NY and was a competitive swimmer for over 12 years. When my swimming “career” ended, I found a love for teaching others how to swim. In my 20s that love of teaching swimming morphed into teaching fitness. I lived in LA for seven years and became a personal swim trainer at Equinox. While I was there, I fell in love with spinning and group fitness. I became a certified Spinning Instructor and taught group classes for the next 6 years.

When I moved to Atlanta, I worked for Flywheel Sports as an Indoor Cycling instructor. I immediately found a community that welcomed me and propelled my love for helping people with their fitness goals and love of self. After 2 years at Flywheel, I had the opportunity to take on a full-time leadership role with a start-up called SculptHouse. It was there that I developed a workout combining the Lagree method with a treadmill component, helped open four studios in three states and became a leader and mentor to over 50 trainers. Helping other trainers grow and succeed has been one of the most rewarding things outside of teaching classes myself.

The end of 2019 brought a new opportunity and in January of 2020, I became the Director of Movement at STAT Wellness. Not only do I love teaching but I’m honored to bring my expertise in group fitness to the first place to combine Functional Medicine and Movement (fitness). I also recently decided to teach a few classes back my old stomping grounds – Flywheel!

In addition to Flywheel and STAT Wellness, I have my own consulting company, I’m a personal trainer but most recently, added Creator and Host of the 6 Feet Above Podcast to my resume. Fitness is such a love of mine but I have learned that your physical being means nothing if you’re mental health isn’t a priority – I want to inspire others to learn the same and take responsibility for their own health and happiness!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I have dealt with personal challenges with my own mental health along the way. There were days when I felt like a fraud trying to inspire others through fitness when I was struggling myself, both physically and mentally. But, I truly believe that is where my story lies.

Some other challenges included vocal nodes, the lack of healthcare working in the fitness industry and working several part-time jobs just to pay the bills because it’s hard to get a full-time job in fitness. The hustle has been very real over the last 12 years. People go into fitness because they love it…because they love people. And because they thrive on creating community and trust.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
STAT Wellness is the first place to combine Functional Medicine and Movement under one roof! Kristin Oja, DNP, FNP-C, IFMCP is the mastermind behind this concept and is setting the bar for what overall health and wellness should look like. As the Director of Movement I help with the group fitness department, hiring trainers, building our personal training programming and creating community in our beautiful space off of Howell Mill.

We specialize in Strength, Stability, Stamina and Personal training on the Movement side. We offer classes in the early mornings, 12 o’clock hour throughout the week, evening classes and Saturday mornings. Personal and small group training takes place whenever the space isn’t being used for group classes.

As for my own consulting company and podcast – I specialize in creating community and trust with my clients and listeners. I have worked as a coach, a group instructor, on the management side, as well as the creative side and now as a director. I see the fitness industry from all angles and can help other business owners do the same through my 12 years of experience.

I think my biggest asset though, is that I am a “connector and presenter.” I help people connect and network, putting like-minded people in touch with each other and am well spoken and trusted in the physical fitness arena as well as the mental health world.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was 13 years old, I qualified for YMCA Nationals. I was one of the youngest in the US to do so and it was such a rush to swim at the National Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Ft. Lauderdale!
