Meet Megan Billingsley of Primed Instincts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Billingsley.

Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We started the business right before COVID hit in March of 2020. I have always wanted to be my own boss and my husband helped to discover my dream of opening a dog training business. I had always dabbled in canine behavior or animal behavior throughout my twenties and early thirties. I got a weekly call or text from friends and family asking for help with their dogs. It just seemed natural to step into the light and bring my focus to this new business. I feel what sets me apart is that I didn’t just learn from dogs about behavioral modification. I’ve worked with big cats, wolves, sled dogs, birds of prey and woodland creatures in my career. All of this culminates into a varied array of behavioral modification knowledge that I’m able to use and formulate for each dog. Every dog + owner relationship is different, there is no one cure. So being able to be flexible and versatile has helped my clients see the positive potential with their dog.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
COVID was the biggest hurdle; how to enter people’s homes and make everyone including myself feel safe. Luckily, a lot of dog training can be outdoors as well!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a dog trainer specializing in positive reinforcement and force-free training. I set myself apart from others by allowing a lot of flexibility in my training homework to coincide with the reality of people’s lives. My favorite course to teach is my Puppy Primer Course because as tough as puppies are, they are also a clean slate and very moldable.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I study a lot of books by other positive reinforcement trainers such as Victoria Stillwell, Karen Pryor, John Rogerson and others.
