Meet Melinda Schmiedeknecht of Resonate Marketing in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Schmiedeknecht.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I graduated college with a degree in marketing and, prior to having children, I built websites and provided marketing services for small businesses. After being a stay-at-home-mom for 5 years, I needed to get back into the workforce but felt very insecure. I also had a strong desire for a flexible position that would allow me to work around my kid’s school schedule and family needs. David Alexander took a chance on me and offered a position as Marketing Director for BNI where I worked mostly from my home office. I’ll forever be grateful for that opportunity. Through my years with BNI, I became even more passionate about helping small business and saw a real need for them in the area of social media and online marketing.

In 2012, I opened my own agency with the goal of helping small businesses navigate the confusing world of social media by leveraging the power of moms with professional business experience. I’m blessed to “pay it forward” and provide flexible employment opportunities to moms who are in situations similar to mine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s no way around good old-fashioned sweat-equity when starting your own business! As much as you try to learn from others, some lessons come through trial and error. You have to find what is going to work best for you and your particular situation and goals.

Work-family balance is the unicorn I’m always searching for. I truly believe it’s a myth! Some days my clients need me more, some days my family takes the majority of my energy. I think a key is prioritizing in the moment and adjusting. Sometimes you get caught up in a production goal or checking off items on a to-do list and when life throws you a curve ball, you have to step back, analyze and readjust. My husband is also good at helping me with this when my perspective gets a little off.

Please tell us about Resonate Marketing.
What sets us apart is our enthusiasm and our willingness to go above and beyond. Of utmost importance to us is to always do what’s best for the client.

Our goal is to create win/win situations. We believe that’s the best path for long-term business relationships. All of our business comes from referrals and business networking.

Digital marketing evolves rapidly and can be overwhelming for a small business. We specialize in helping business owners to focus on the areas that will give them the best ROI and we create a realistic, manageable strategy.

We start with a company’s goal: what are you trying to accomplish in social media and with your digital marketing? We research your audience, competitors and existing trends related to your industry, then we create a strategy based on your goals, resources and the research.

Once the strategy is created, we will either teach you how to implement it or we can provide a dedicated project manager to implement for you. Our monthly social media management is always done with the client’s input and feedback. In effect, our project manager becomes part of your team.

We are very proud to have a fantastic team of work-from-home moms who do a wonderful job being online “cheerleaders” for small business and helping to boost the local economy!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My dad bought a motorboat that looked like one from an old James Bond movie. It must have been made in the late 50’s and was red with fins off the back. I thought it looked so cool! Once our family of four piled in with picnic and swimming supplies, it was riding very low in the water. We were going pretty fast out on the lake and the family dog leaned over too far and fell in! She was on a leash and we recovered her without injury. It was a very scary moment, but we all laughed about it after she was safe. That’s a day I’ll never forget.
