Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Arnett.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
BNL Consulting (BNL) was started in 2007 by former employees of the SAS Institute. I joined the organization in 2008, and I joined ownership in 2010.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’d say we have been very fortunate and the road has not been overly bumpy. We have benefited from a strong relationship with the SAS Institute and their customer base. However, like any small business, there have been challenges along the way. Personally, it has been challenging to move from the hands-on work to management work.
Please tell us about BNL Consulting.
BNL has specialized in helping organizations manage their data. This includes building custom, self-service analytic systems, migrating legacy data systems to more modern and easily managed architectures, and integrating enterprise systems. We work with both proprietary technologies and open-source technologies to help organizations leverage their existing IT investments while taking advantage of the always improving technology tools available.
I am most proud of the culture and team we have built at BNL. I take a lot of pride in the quality of the work we do, but the work environment, the respect shared between fellow workers, the breadth and depth of our collaborative strengths, and the ability to critically discuss various sides of a potential solution and reach a work product that best addresses the needs of our customers is probably what sets us apart and makes me the proudest.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Our culture is important to us and to our customers. We prioritize honesty and transparency, a high work ethic, the delivery of quality work product, and finding solid solutions where others have not. For our internal work culture, we created an environment where each employee is treated with respect and work-life balance is a critical priority. Furthermore, we work to invest in the growth of our employees and to create a sense of comradery and teamwork.
