Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Jones.
Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started as a young child growing up in Jamaica. Living in the ghetto’s of Jamaica, we as a community learned that a lot of things are not accessible so you have to create your own path in order to make it out of poverty. I was always drawn to art from a tender age where I used to draw and create in my spare time at school and home. Growing up, I got more interested in the art of photography by seeing different styles of photography everywhere on social media. Just the process of how everything was composed and structured to capture that specific moment in time was mind-blowing to me. At age 18, I had the opportunity to move to America in which I knew that this would be the start of my journey to stride for a creative outlook. In April 2015, I received my first ever camera to start this journey and was really excited about that. Each and every day, I would try to go out and practice on friends so I could get a feel of what I was doing. Learning about lighting and the settings of the camera itself, I got discouraged and in two short months of having the camera, I decided to put it down. After putting the camera down, it was an uphill battle with the creative parts of my mind because I was not able to create anything.
One day, on January 2019, I had a dream about myself being a successful photographer and in that dream, I saw a happy me. A person that was excited to create and put smiles on everyone’s face after they received their images. I woke up in the middle of that night and told myself I was going to make this dream a reality and I immediately told my roommate the same thing. My roommate decided that he would help me on this journey and we started a business from there. The entire living room of our apartment was turned into a studio space and each passing week we ordered more an more equipment to make this happen. I studied extensively about different techniques to find the way how I wanted to make my images look and stand out. I started shooting with models every single day of the week from February to June and made sure I put in the work so that I had content to post every single day. The quality of work that I produced in such a short space of time caught everyone off guard and that made models and photographers alike to want to work with me. I established consistent bookings now and I am on my journey to grow as a content creator and to become a regular for the majority of Atlanta then take it as a nation and worldwide. Nothing will stop me from achieving my goals. Prayer and work will forever conquer all.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road because you will face obstacles every day. Nothing in life is easy and that’s what makes it even better to pull through whatever you’re faced with. Some of the struggles I’ve faced early on is not being able to book consistently. With all the equipment and time that is needed, not everyone booked that enquired about me taking their photographs. There have been some days where I would do free photoshoots to keep up the buzz on social media because the reality is you will not get bored every single day. With that being said, if you have faith and your work speaks to different clients, you will be booking shoots regularly. Everything in life just takes time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
SK Visionz Photography focuses on creating and meeting every client’s needs and also developing rising talents such as models, makeup artists, hairstylists, designers, etc. We are known for creating high-quality images at an affordable rate so that it is possible for everyone to get their pictures taken. I am most proud of what we have accomplished in a short space of time and it only goes up each day. What sets me apart from others would definitely have to be my outgoing personality, the time in which clients receive their photos and also the quality of work.
What were you like growing up?
I was definitely an outgoing child that was very respectful to others. I loved to be around people and just enjoy life. In school, I used to be a bit talkative but it turned out to be a good thing because I love to socialize with my clients. I wanted to be anything in the art world whether it was in music, dance, photography, and drawing. I would always bother my mother for a phone with a camera so that I can practice taking pictures and that helped with where I am at today.
