Meet Michael Mauldin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Mauldin.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been in fascinated with drawing and lines since I was a young kid. Art and making things is an outlet that has always been there for my detail oriented mind. When I was young I wanted to be a comic book artist so I would copy comics when I wasn’t drawing dinosaurs and animals. I flirted with being a graffiti artist for a while and that helped me learn a lot about color, perspective and composition. I’m self-taught I didn’t go to art school or college, I had a lot of teachers along the way. But ultimately I did it on my own. There’s always some technique to learn or some new medium play with.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m an illustrator and a calligrapher. I do some mural work and graphic design but I love making things for people to put on their walls. Recently I’ve been taking small inexpensive paper tags and trying to make them valuable, worth something. I paint and draw on them with ink and other mediums. I make a lot of detailed animals and random thoughts. Tags have so much power when they are on garments and other products it has all the Important information on it but it’s ultimately discarded, I want to make something small that has value and that people want to hold on too but is still inexpensive enough that almost anyone can afford them.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think the role of the artist is to make beautiful things. To create things that challenge us and make us think about and question our preconceived ideas of what life is about. It’s our job to highlight and infuse beauty into the ordinary spaces.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My Instagram is probably the best way to view my most recent works I also have been talking to a couple of galleries in town so will see what happens.
