Meet Michael Tran of The Sweet Spot Bakery in Duluth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Tran.

Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was young, I have always enjoyed cooking. I decided to pursue my passion. I enrolled and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts majoring in Classical French and Modern Cuisine. While attending culinary school, I was exposed to the world of pastries and desserts and my interest grew from there. I have worked in many different places that gave me training and experience with pastries. I also took additional cake decorating classes to help strengthen my artistic abilities. What I found most intriguing was the ability to experiment with different types of desserts. I discovered that my talents and artistic abilities led me to think out of the box and be creative with cakes. I started testing out different flavors and recipes to make cakes that were moist, flavorful and unique. I have always dreamed of owning my own bakery where I could utilize my talents and share my unique desserts to the public.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Prior to the decision of opening up my bakery, I had built up many loyal customers that encouraged me to have a storefront. After much research and support from my wife, who is an elementary school teacher, I decided to proceed with finding the right location. It was a tough journey because I had to weigh the risks and opportunities at each spot. The process took longer than expected because of this. After finding the right location, I started working with contractors to build the bakery. I had no idea how much labor, time and numerous inspections it would take to build from scratch. The process took 6 months. Along the way, I also had a lot of help from family and friends who volunteered their time.

“The Sweet Spot Bakery” carries a wide selection of cupcakes, cakes and desserts. We specialize in creating flavors that are light, not too sweet, yet very flavorful. Every product contains quality ingredients and is carefully crafted. We put a lot of thought into each and every item that is on our menu. Research and testing are conducted to ensure our products meet customers’ expectations. We also keep up with the latest trends and modern techniques in the pastry industry. Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe everything happens for a reason. There have been many trials and tribulations that did set me back but I persevered and did not give up. Many learning opportunities came about in the process of opening the bakery and it strengthened my determination. I believe that maintaining a positive attitude and having a good work ethic will lead to good luck.
