Today we’d like to introduce you to Michal Renee.
Michal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved doing hair, It’s in my bloodline. My grandmother was a hairdresser and My aunt is still doing hair at 65. My mother was not a hair-anything lol, she didn’t have to be, she had my aunt and grandma. After the 5th grade, she kindly told me that I was on my own(with my hair) so I basically had to teach myself how to do my hair. That’s when I learned how to braid, weaves, curls, makeup etc. My mom found out I could braid so every other Saturday, I did my sisters hair fit church. I graduated from the Brio hair academy in Meriden, Connecticut and I’ve been going hard ever since. I knew I always wanted to be a short cut/relaxed stylist because I love short cuts; I would rock them all of the time! But then I went natural and everything changed. I started to become concerned that women would either go natural and not know what to do with their natural hair, or they would bash their hair so bad and run to the wigs or sew ins damaging their hair even more. I felt like I needed to do something about it, so I became Sheer Glory’s natural hair salon: no relaxers, and no weaves (crochet styles only). My goal is to teach women how to fall in love with their hair and showing them how to take care of their natural hair in a holistic way.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth. When I moved to Huntsville in 2015, I had to start all over again literally. Doing hair in CT is completely different, so it was like having to start from scratch, but In the meantime, I found my purpose.
It’s hard to try to retrain people’s mindset, especially on how they see their natural kinks and curls. I’m a natural hairstylist that doesn’t do weave In one of the most southern bell cities in Alabama, where straight hair and long weaves rule; It’s a daily fight. But I am willing to do what I must, to show women that ALL natural hair is beautiful!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a fully natural hair care salon. I’ve been working in fully transitioning into a holistic natural hair salon. I provide my own shampoos, conditioners, and hair growth oil. The services we provide include natural styles such as twist outs, wash and go, updos, flexi rods, etc., the Sheer Signature Silk press, and crochet braids. Along with personalized treatments. I also do a lot of weddings and so natural bridal hair! Being a fully natural salon is unheard of in Huntsville, along with being a holistic hairstylist. What sets me apart is my heart for being a true natural salon. Making my own products and using vegan products to help not only maintain but grow their hair without all of those harsh chemicals. My mission is even to reverse alopecia. I believe it can and will happen! I do travel CT, ATL, AL.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I strive to be integral and consistent. I believe that this industry has lost that. Also, knowing you are why you will get very far when you understand your purpose and you are why. Even with the bumps in the road, you’ll keep going because you know the why.
