Meet Michele Sorkin and Jennifer Scott of Wonder Dog Bakery in Northwest Suburbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Sorkin and Jennifer Scott.

Wonder Dog Bakery was started back in 1998 by Jennifer Scott, making treats for fun for friends and family. Jen met Michele Sorkin in 2008 while working in the corporate marketing world and soon realized that Michele loved baking treats for her fur babies, and shared the same passion for dogs. After watching many of our friends and colleagues fall victim to economic downsizing, we decided to take a leap of faith and make our dream a reality.

We started small, attending the Woodstock Farm Fresh Market each week and a few local festivals. We have no money for advertising, so we have to rely solely on word-of-mouth and our delicious products. We have taken a slow and steady approach and learning as much as we can along the way to be successful. Growing steadily since 2016, we hope to have a brick and mortar bakery very soon!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have had some bumps along the way, but knew it was to be expected. There is a lot that goes into starting a business – having a great product or service isn’t enough. There is insurance, 3rd Party testing, application fees, licenses, certifications of recipes, taste testing, market research, and more. Our biggest challenges are 1) advertising – we use Facebook and Instagram to gain the most reach and 2) competing for shelf space with mass-produced treats.

Please tell us about your business.
Wonder Dog Bakery offers all-natural dog treats using only USA/locally sourced, human-grade ingredients. No salt, sugar, colors, or preservatives. Each cookie is handcrafted with love in small batches to ensure freshness. We are most proud of our loyal followers. We have several dogs that know who we are when dropping off cookies at one of our dog-friendly breweries – they are so excited to see us! And we often hear an owner tell us their fur baby dragged them to our booth as soon as they get out of the car for the Farmer’s Markets and festivals.

We think that there are very few dog cookie producers would regularly eat their own products. We pride ourselves in having the freshest, highest quality ingredients – and have eaten every single one. Jen’s favorite is Sweet P For Your Sweet Pea® cookies, Michele loves Mike’s Monkey Bites® – they taste just like banana bread fresh out of the oven!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We love all the dogs – we don’t care if they are big, small, what breed they are, or how much money they make. We love to see our regulars at markets and festivals and makes what we do an absolute joy. This isn’t a job for us, it’s our passion. We make fantastic cookies, and the dogs definitely let us know we are doing something right.
