Meet Michelle Kincaid of Vintage Hair Salon in Smyrna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Kincaid.

Michelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At the time we opened the salon, I had been doing hair for about 10 years and had always worked for someone else. I had a million ideas and the passion to back it up so I decided it was time to take the leap of faith and go out on my own. My husband and I opened the salon 3 years ago and haven’t looked back. We grew slowly, one stylist at a time. Today all of our chairs are full and we have a great group of talented stylists. Our goal was to create an environment where the stylists we stress free and could create their art and also a place where clients could come and relax and get really good consistent customer service every time. We like spoiling our stylists and our clients!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road will always be bumpy as a business owner but we try to stay positive and press forward. At the beginning we ran into road blocks with the city and permits etc. Now we find that our struggles are just maintaining the building and keeping everyone happy.

Vintage Hair Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I would say our customer service sets us apart. We wanted to go back to the way customers used to be treated. We do hand written thank you notes and really try to get the personal connection with each client. They aren’t just another appointment on the books. They are a friend that is dropping by to catch up and leave beautiful and refreshed. Educating the client on their hair and how to style it at home is huge for us.

We specialize in Hair coloring and cuts. I think that connection with our clients is what we are becoming known for. I’m proud of my stylists and their drive to learn. They are always growing in their art. We attend and host classes to make sure they are up to date with the newest trends. But their passion always leaves me in awe of them.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is how much I’m enjoying the journey. I think that if I set a marker for a set moment in time where I should “be happy” that I will more likely “be disappointed”. So for me, I feel like I’m am successful when I’m happy in the heat of the battle. When I walk away from a hard day and I’m still in love with my salon and everyone in it. And I am… I really love it. So I guess I found that success, in the journey.
