Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Barker.
Miles, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Miles Barker. I’m an R&B, Pop, Artist, Producer, Singer-Songwriter from Buffalo, New York. I go by the name of Miles B. I started getting into music kind of young. My dad uses to play all kinds of music when I was a kid growing up, from Pop, R&B/Soul, Jazz, probably more than what I can think of. The main person who stuck with me growing up was Michael Jackson. I can’t dance anything like him, I’ve tried and it never works out but he is definitely one of my idols. From watching some of his concerts on TV and seeing how he helps and touches lives with his music and his great energy, it made me want to do the same.
I started officially making music in middle school. My dad got me a microphone, audio interface, laptop with a recording program called Cubase, ya know the basics to start with. So I started getting into the recording side of music by recording at home and watching YouTube videos studying how to work the program and learning the engineering side of music so I can eventually become great at it. Then I realized in my middle school and high school we had a recording studio, so I asked one of my music teachers to show me how everything worked and I began going there at least with some of my friends at least three times a day. I would go during lunch, a study hall period, because I was in a band I would sometimes lie to my teachers and tell them I had band lessons so I can skip class and record music. I played sports year-round, so I made sure I got in there after school right before practice sometimes too.
As I got older and social media started to really come into effect, I began networking on any sites I had and made some pretty good connections through that. Then the main app that helped me gain a fanbase came out and that was Vine. I was singing the six second covers and got some pretty good attention from it. I formed a group with some dope individuals and ended up getting kicked out because I wasn’t consistent enough on the app and I didn’t take it as serious as they did. Little did I know that the app could’ve literally started my career. So that was a huge life lesson to be more consistent with what you’re doing in your craft take it serious because you never know what can happen. Anyway, I got connected with one of my great friends, basically brother now, and he ended up moving to ATL. So I decided to fly out every two weeks to work and connect with him and other crazy talented creatives and ended up getting a great connection with the team out here. I realized that was a place I had to be so moved a couple of months later and have been creating with some more great people since.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been denied a couple times, like others but it hasn’t stopped me from what’s destined to come. There’s a lot of people who say they’ll “help” or they know this person they know that person etc. in reality they just want to be around. I just asked questions and learn because you can never go wrong with having more knowledge. That’s why I do a lot of things with music on my own. I’ve had some setbacks from certain people, so I had to take things in my own hands. There’s one thing I would say people should stop saying is “I can’t do this” and should change it to “I can’t do this YET” because you can always learn to figure out ways to do what you can’t do.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a R&B/Soul, Pop, artist, singer-songwriter, producer, engineer. I’m just proud of how far I’ve become so far, nowhere near to what I want to be but being consistent has shown it perks so I’ll continue being consistent with my craft. I think my work ethic is different, someone once told me there are a lot of dope artist, the producer just creatives in general and a lot of them are lazy because of their talent, then you have to an artist who isn’t good at all but their grind is impeccable and just by that it makes them seem more important than what they actually are because they’re more serious. So he told me to not be that lazy talented artist, and keep the same work ethic I have because great things will come.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Well, my city is Buffalo, New York. I loved that city I just had how cold it is, that’s another reason why I left, cold weather and I aren’t best friends. My city has some AMAZING talent there and I want to be another person who can help showcase that talent in the future. Atlanta wise I just moved here, so there are not too many negatives. The main negative are the driver’s NOBODY literally NOBODY can drive here it’s crazy.
