Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Johnson.
Hi Miles, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a senior communications major and sports journalism minor from Philadelphia attending Morehouse College. Since I was a sophomore in high school, my goal was to have my own sports talk show. During July of 2020, I started my own podcast called Real Talk with MJ, that covers all sports and all taps in social injustices we see in sports today. I took the extra time I was given during quarantine to start my own podcast and hone on my skills in terms of talking in front of a camera/mic, learning how to edit and managing a team of 8 interns.
Miles took what he learned from his own podcast and applied these skills to his roles with the school newspaper, “The Maroon Tiger.” Miles started with the Maroon Tiger his sophomore year, and then he went onto become the sports editor/sports producer his junior year and then was promoted to managing editor his senior year. During Miles’ junior year, he was awarded an opportunity to be one of three students on behalf of Morehouse’s journalism program to attend NBA All-Star Weekend as the only HBCU in attendance covering the weekend. Furthermore, he was a part of the first NBAxHBCU stream broadcast on NBA League Pass and he later became the lead host for three broadcasts this year as a senior. In addition, Miles was invited by NBA TNT to shadow Bleacher Report sideline reporter Chris Haynes during MLK Day in 2023. During the game, Miles interviewed Hawks head coach Nate McMillan.
Currently, Miles’ podcast, “Real Talk with MJ” has over 15,000 followers across all social platforms including Instagram, Youtube, Tik Tok and Twitter. Miles also knows that writing is key and as a graduating senior that is looking for opportunities in journalism post-grad, he knows that writing goes hand-in-hand with having a successful career on camera. Lastly, Miles is a huge advocate for HBCUs and he has covered the HBCU All-Star Showcase in Cleveland, OH during All-Star Weekend 2022 and was the media coverage lead for the HBCU All Stars Challenge that happened in Nov. 2022.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Something interesting and unique about Miles is that he’s had a stutter since he was four years old, however that has never been something that would deter him from his ultimate goal of having his own sports talk show. Miles lives by a quote that a mentor of his told him which was “Stuttering can be an anchor that holds you back or a springboard that propels you forward.” Miles does not believe that he would have achieved all these accomplishments in sports if he didn’t have a stutter that challenged him to have a great work ethic.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an aspiring sports reporter/journalist who’s long-term goal is to have my own sports talk show.
I am known as the “sports guy” on campus.
I am most proud of being invited to be on a panel with former NBA player and 2nd overall pick in the 2012 draft, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, to talk about our experiences with growing up and having a stutter. In addition, to being okay with our identity as a black man in America.
