Meet Millicent Whilby and Hyacinth Gordon and of Clifton’s American West Indians Cuisine in Fairburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Millicent Whilby and Hyacinth Gordon

Millicent and Hyacinth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are two sisters that were serving cooked food since we were living in Jamaica. Once here in America we have strived to live the American dream. Working full-time jobs, hoping to one day be able to own our own business. The opportunity arose for us to get back into the business of serving good food to bring a smile to peoples face. We complied all the money we could muster to purchase this location. So far 10 years and still going.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
From day one it was not a smooth road, the city gave us a hard time to get open, and it took a year of fighting all the so called inspections to get open. When we were finally opened, the police was a constant present at our doorsteps. They even went as far as to enter the building and perform an illegal search of the premises, and some of the customers. We were still not deterred. Everything we tried to do to make some money was met with resistance from the city. We started out by selling food in the morning and then rebuying supplies to make food for the next day. We specialize in making small batches of food so you get fresh food throughout the day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Clifton’s American West Indians Cuisine – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We serve authentic Jamaican dishes. We specialize in dishes like our red snapper, oxtails and our outside jerked chicken. We are proud to be a family oriented black owned business. What set us apart from all the other business in our field is the time it takes us to prepare your food. We are not a fast food establishment, we take our time to make sure it is done right. Other restaurants have the food already make and right there in front of you on a steam table, or patties in a warmer. We bake our patties hot and fresh when ordered.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are on a 3 acre plot on a major highway, we would love to redesign our location with a new up to date facility. We would love to be able to attract new investors that we can partner with to include others eateries. For now, we are happy just providing good food to the ones that love what we have to offer.

Pricing:

  • Red snapper ranger from $20 to $26 with the head on.
  • the price oxtails and goat have been steady climbing so now our small and large are $12 and $18
  • We are willing to make any Jamaican dish you like if we are giving enough notice.
  • we also carry our own line of homemade Jamaican drinks, soursop, ginger, cucumber, sorrel, and fruit punch all $3 each
