Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Walter Sims.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Your situation is not your destination, but it should be your motivation. #DrSims
I got fired!
The Lord had been urging me to resign from my career as an engineer at a Nuclear Plant for the last 3 years (which 3 years ago now). I was attempting to work a 40-hour plus week job and run my business as a motivational speaker and spiritual life coach (The Minister of Motivation). I was listening to the voice of other people (i.e. wifey) saying that I could not leave my “good job” and I could do my “play job” off hours and on the weekend. “You got all the time in the world to chase that dream.” (were her exact words!)
However, I was not happy. I wanted to do what I knew I had been called to do; motivate and inspire the world one person at a time. So, here it is April 17, 2015, and my manager steps into my cubicle at 3:45 pm CST. She tells me there is an emergency meeting downstairs at 4:00 pm CST. I said I will be there not knowing the details of the meeting. I arrived in the conference downstairs at the appointed time. The first one to the room. At 4:05 pm CST, my manager walks in along with her manager and the head of human resources. I still was clueless.
She proceeds to simply state that I was listed as a low performer in November 2014 and here it is April 2015 and my performance had not improved. As of today, you are fired. I very calmly asked, “What do I need to do now?” I was not allowed to go upstairs and gather my things. Human Resources manager asked my manager to go upstairs and obtain my things that were on my desk. Cheryl asked me, “How are you? You sure are taking this quite well.” I simply stated that everyone had a job to do and they were doing theirs.
At that moment, a spirit of peace washed over me. God had taken the choice out of my hands to make the call to resign or not. They did let me resign in lieu of termination. I thought this was appropriate to ensure my 401K and pension were unaffected by my termination.
All this time, I realized I had been living as a hypocrite in my own life. I was walking in fear while preaching about faith. I was unwilling to take the leap “on my own.” I am so in love with the Lord today because He literally pushed me out of the plane of purpose. I sprouted wings and I have been soaring for the past several years doing what I have been called to do. Well, what is that Dr. Sims? I am a spiritual life coach. My purpose is to help bridge the gap between where you are to where God wants you to be. You are the purpose. There is a specific thing that YOU have been charged to do.
But Dr. Sims, I am stuck. How did you get unstuck? You need to have the courage to take a leap of faith. The Lord knew I needed a kick in the pants (i.e. getting fired). You may be stronger than I was. This is why, I am so adamant now with my clients, telling them to do that thing that terrifies them. Do that thing that makes them break out in a cold sweat. This is my challenge to you today. If you want my advice, please JUST DO IT. I can truly say now that I have taken my leap of faith… well, with a little help from the Lord. I am truly living on purpose.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth in the sense that I am in the right lane.
Challenges are sustaining a business (i.e. getting clients, speaking engagements, more business opportunities).
Please tell us about The Minister of Motivation, LLC.
I am a professional speaker and a relationship/spiritual life coach. I tell my clients I get to share their life with them. I specialize in helping people realize, discover their purpose. I also help people with their relationships. I remind people if you do not love yourself, no one else will love you.
NEWSFLASH
Just the other day, one of my clients, gifted me with a registration to the upcoming HOPE GLOBAL FORUM which is being held in Atlanta, March 26 thru 28, 2018. They just emailed me asking me to be a session leader. It goes without saying I am stoked. This is in my wheelhouse because I am a great facilitator (I live stream and I produced my own radio and TV show). I am very comfortable in front of an audience.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
My dad was a pastor. One of the regrets I listed in an article I wrote 2 years ago, I would have gotten in this lane (speaker/lifecoach) sooner because I could have really benefitted from who my dad was. I am a pastor also and ran from this pretty much half of my life. I took the route of engineering versus accepting my calling into the ministry which if I had done sooner, my dad and I could have really bonded more since we shared the same anointing.
