Today we’d like to introduce you to Missi Wolf.
Missi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had never worked out a day in my life until I was 33 years old. True story. I was 206 lbs. My Doctor told me I was morbidly obese, at risk for heart disease and I better get my act together. I had two daughters, 3 and 1 years old. I couldn’t even carry them more than a few steps. I walked to mailbox and had to lie down for 30 minutes in the yard. True story. I tried everything, every diet, every workout (this was 1999), every cleanse all of it. Lose ten pounds gain them back. Then I found Interval training and Heart Rate Training. Real heart rate training- not a formula but really knowing how our bodies work and what it means to do a high-intensity workout vs. a low-intensity workout. I lost 100 lbs. True story.
It was hard work, and it took me almost two years but I did it and it changed my life. I am not a “fitness person.” I don’t have degrees and certifications but I have surrounded myself with the best people in fitness who do. In 2008 I opened up my first BLAST Interval training studio with nothing but a deep pure passion for how this workout and lifestyle had completely and utterly changed every single thing about my life. Eleven years later, we have moved that original studio three times as we have grown. We opened a second location in Atlanta and I am still just as in love with BLAST (my third child) as I ever have been. It is a gift and an absolute privilege to be part of our client’s journeys towards health and wellness.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth! The fitness industry is ever-changing, there are more and more concepts popping up every day creating all kinds of competition. The bigger chains have more money, more staff, more marketing ability on a larger scale. I feel incredibly blessed that I entered the industry in 2008 and was able to establish a strong, loyal client base. 42% of our clients have been with us since the day we opened. That is something I am very proud of.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
BLAST is an acronym for Balanced Levels of Aerobic and Strength Training. HIIT training is very popular right now. We are known for our differentiators in this space. We use Freemotion Incline Trainers- they go to a 30% incline and we use that! We really do cater to every fitness level. We have guidelines for runners, joggers and walkers. I always ask people, “can you walk on a treadmill even holding on and lift your arms over your head? If the answer is yes, then you can get a great workout at BLAST.” We have true beginners, people who like me have never worked out a day in their life, working out next to an elite athlete. Each one gets exactly what they need in that hour at our studios. We really do personalized training in a group setting.
Our instructors are all over form and ensuring that no one gets hurt. Our Metabolic Profile is what we are really known for. We use state of the art science to capture each client’s individual anaerobic threshold. In layman’s terms, we teach each client where their bodies go from using fat as a primary fuel source to using carbs/sugars as a primary fuel source. You need to do high and low-intensity workouts to reach your pinnacle of fitness and most people just don’t have the information to know how to truly work out smarter not harder. It’s the game-changer and once you have that information, you are pretty much set in terms of reaching your goals and knowing what you are accomplishing in every workout.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a fantastic city, I have lived here my whole life. In fact it is such a fantastic city that fitness has boomed here. In our industry they call Atlanta “little New York” simply for the fact that there are as many fitness studios per square mile as there are in NYC! Having said that, I am a huge believer in doing what you love and what feeds your soul.
For me, there is nothing I love doing more than interacting with my clients and knowing every night when I put my head on my pillow that whatever the day brought, I had some impact on changing lives. There truly is no greater gift than that. If you are passionate about what you do and that falls into the fitness realm, I would say do your homework, talk to as many people in the industry as you can, weigh all the pros and cons and then make up your mind!
