Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Oaks Paxton, The Spiritual Attorney.
Misty, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Rocky Hill, Connecticut, and it’s a beautiful place to grow up, but the opportunities for a young black woman who wants to explore more culture and spirituality were not abundant. So I decided to move south and attend law school at THE North Carolina Central University (Eagle Pride!). Divine Spirit did not steer me wrong with choosing my alma mater, as it is an amazing HBCU that gave me such a rich experience for which I am forever grateful. Upon graduating at the top of my class, I received an incredible offer from a large law firm in Atlanta and that brought me down to the A. The money was wonderful but the work-life balance was not. I put in 60, sometimes 80 hour weeks and on top of that, I felt like I couldn’t be myself. I felt quite restricted like I had to pretend to be someone I wasn’t to be accepted and approved of by my peers. Needless to say, I couldn’t keep up the charade for long.
I left the firm and founded my legal practice, The Oaks Firm, in 2009. I am proud to say that during my time there, I helped hundreds of homeowners and consumers with Loan Modifications, Foreclosure Defense, Bankruptcy and Short Sales, among other services. I was the recipient of the Superstar Trailblazer Award from People You Need to Know Magazine, I was featured in the Who’s Who of Atlanta several times, and I even had my radio show for about a year that was gaining popularity. But while my career was thriving, I was not. I was overwhelmed, stressed, burdened, and feeling the pressure of the expectations clients place on attorneys, Once again, I found myself wondering how much longer I could keep up the high-pressure lifestyle I was leading. That led me to search for something I could put all of my Scorpio passion into.
I was passionate about so many things, I was unsure for a while which avenue to pursue vigorously. As a singer/songwriter, a toy developer, an actress, a writer and a deeply spiritual being, choosing between all these creative outlets was next to impossible. I had no idea what to do. But as I always tell people, when you don’t know what to do, do nothing at all. Get very still and very quiet and begin to tune into the voice within. I took my advice at that juncture in my life and began to meditate and journal every day. Being the perpetual student I am, I dove into spirituality, metaphysics and energy healing full force, fascinated by all that I was learning. And I began to open myself up to all the signs, messages and tools from the Universe to help give me guidance, clarity and confirmation.
At that point, I had already been reading Birth, Love and Destiny Cards for about ten years and started giving readings to friends and family members who were curious. The feedback was astounding. Everyone seemed to love it. They wanted more and I wanted to give them more. I fell in love with the work I was doing and my passion was set on fire by sharing it. Never before had I felt that I was in exactly the right place and living my purpose until I followed the path of my deepest calling. Today, I am both proud and humbled to say that I have helped countless clients get in tune with their higher selves and callings. It’s my honor to provide guidance and confirmation through my readings, knowledge and insight through my teachings, and empower my clients to take back control of their minds, their lives, and their destinies.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t believe life is designed to be a smooth road. After all, it’s the struggles, the challenges and the valleys on the journey that teach us so much about who we are and what we’re made of. So to answer your question, no the road has not been smooth, but I am grateful for every single bump along the way that helps me tap into more wisdom, resilience and inner-strength.
Most of my struggles have been internal, to be honest. The general theme of my struggles has been “overcoming fear.” Fear of what others might think of me, fear of rejection, fear of not being good enough, fear of what would be required of me if I ever do reach the heights of success, fear of not having enough resources or having too many resources to manage, fear of having to sacrifice love and family for my career, and the list goes on and on. Some of these are still struggles and require regular prayer, meditation, tapping and affirmations to help me work through.
Please tell us about your business.
My brand is The Spiritual Attorney and the same thing you would contact a regular attorney for, to help you navigate man-made laws, you would contact me to help you navigate Universal, Spiritual & Metaphysical laws. I do this in several ways. Primarily, I am a teacher, speaker and corporate wellness trainer, where I show people how to cultivate mindfulness and meditation practices, energy clearing techniques, enhance their emotional intelligence, how to use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique/Tapping) to help change their lives, and many other topics that I am passionate about sharing.
In my one-on-one work with clients, I am an intuitive Tarot, Oracle, Birth, Love & Destiny Card Reader, and I use these tools to give my clients who are seeking answers, guidance and confirmation. I am an energy healer who performs Chakra Clearings using crystals, sound and aromatherapy. I also use EFT/Tapping on my clients to remove subconscious blockages and free up any blocked, trapped or stagnant energy. I am also a Spiritual Life Coach, so I work with my clients on the daily application of spiritual principles that can help change their lives if they’re willing to do the work. From the feedback I get from my clients, it seems I’m most known for being thorough, genuine, on point, fully present, compassionate and empowering.
What sets me apart from others is that I am a deep diver who will go all the way to the bottom of the ocean if I feel that’s where your healing is. So if anyone is considering my services, just know that we are going to do the work. We will do the self-assessment, self-acceptance, and self-love work. We will do the truth-telling, light-shining, revolutionary transformation work. We will do the restoring, reconnecting, and realigning with our highest self work. But be prepared to do the work.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as your inner state of happiness. No matter what you do, no matter what you aspire to, no matter what you have or don’t have, no matter how far you’ve come or how far you have left to go; no matter what–if you are happy, secure, grateful, fulfilled, connected to the Source and shining from the inside out, that, to me, is the definition of success.
