Meet Moe Carr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe Carr.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I didn’t know that my business would be as big as it is today, and it’s not even that big yet. I started my bartending journey in 2007 working local bars in the neighborhood. From there, a flourished to nightlife, working in different nightclubs. One of my customers asked me to come to host the bar at a private event in 2014. Skeptical about the process, I still went to work the private affair. I loved it so much I just knew I wanted to do those private events all the time. In 2017, Moe’s Mixes was birthed. I decided in 2021 I was gonna quit my full-time job to bartend full-time (this was not for me). After I left my full time, I tried my hand in the restaurant industry (this also was not for me). Although I made a lot of connections working in other establishments, I wanted more for myself. A friend of mine told me this: “Your business is successful with you giving 90% of your time and focus to other businesses, imagine if you gave yourself and your business 100% of you.” Those words stuck like glue. From that moment in 2021 until now I have been going full throttle with my business. I decided to jump back into full-time work because most of my gigs were at night, I could be making extra money during the day to moonlight my passion. Cut to today, Moe’s Mixes is what I never imagined it would or could be and I’m forever grateful for my path.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not smooth sailing but also no struggles per say. A lot to learn on a road you’ve never been down before. The toughest challenge has been getting out of my own head and not thinking so much. I am still currently working on this.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a mixologist, creativity is a MUST! It’s extremely hard to remain creative in a world that is so impressed by things they see online. Plenty of times, my clients have brought me other bartenders’ pictures saying they want their bar to look the exact same. Now I know social media is designed to throw things at us but it’s hard to tell a client no to what they want; when you simply just want creative range. In an industry where things are easily duplicated, I want to create a space that’s very different from what others are doing. This becomes hard to do when clients won’t let you.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My city has opened the door for me to do what I love. I have met so many beautiful spirits and for that, I’m appreciative. I do not like that nightlife ends at 2am when there’s money that can be made all night and morning 😄
