Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Carr.
Hi Molly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been baking almost my whole life. I grew up with a Grandmother and Mother who both baked. Every time I visited my grandmother, she would have a new recipe for us to try out. I grew up with many fond memories in her kitchen. My Mom always made my birthday cake growing up. It was always so exciting to me to get to pick out the cake that my Mom would make for me. When it came time for me to go to college, I knew that I wanted to study something food-related, and I found Food Science. I loved every minute of it. Baking truly is a science! I pretty much always knew that I wanted to bake for others, to see the joy on their faces brings me so much joy. It takes me back to those sweet childhood memories with my family. In 2019, I began an Instagram page sharing my baking and wanting to see where things would go. Soon enough, a friend asked me if I could bake a cake for a birthday, and it has just grown since then. There has been alot of trial and error. I have spent many times watching videos and practicing techniques. I believe that there is always room to grow, and having a science background, I love to experiment. Now in 2023, I am specializing in made-from-scratch buttercream cakes and cupcakes for any occasion.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As with everyone else, I did take a hit during Covid as not many people were getting together for celebrations. However, this gave me a lot of time to work and practice my techniques. I was able to grow my business just through videos I was sharing of practice cakes and perfecting my recipes. And of course, there have been some cake fails along the way…we are all human!
We’ve been impressed with Mrs. Carr Bakes, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in made-from-scratch buttercream cakes and cupcakes for any occasion. Whether big or small, everyone deserves something sweet! I have a background in Food Science which has really helped me to develop my recipes. I also have gluten-free and dairy-free offerings. I am most proud of how I have grown in my decorating skills. I firmly believe that cakes first of all, have to taste great! I really began baking to make yummy things, and then later on began focusing on mastering the decorating. A few weeks ago my entire refrigerator was full of cake, and it made me so happy! I love being able to bake for others and to be just a small part of those happy moments.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Seeing the smile on someone’s face when they try my cakes. Many people didn’t grow up with someone who was making desserts from scratch for them, and let me tell you from scratch just plain tastes better! So I love it when clients truly taste the difference for the first time.
