Meet Molly Gravitt of Molly Jane Designs in Brookhaven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Gravitt.

Molly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my company in 2012. Since I was young, I’ve been drawn to all things design-focused from jewelry and handbags to beautiful textiles and captivating rooms. I began my business with making jewelry in the small laundry room of my house that had I converted into an office. Shortly after diving into the jewelry business, I began the journey of making handbags by hand with my mother’s old sewing machine. I would create a sample and then began the long process of researching and connecting with various leather distributors and handbag manufacturers in the U.S. I ran my accessories business for seven years, working both on the wholesale/retailers side as well as selling directly to customers via my website. Over those seven years, my interest in interior design grew stronger and I found small projects to work on, whether it was for my house or a close friend. I would spend hours flipping through design books and magazines, I couldn’t get enough.

One year after my first child was born, I began to feel the desire to close up shop on my accessories business. It was a long process and one I spent a lot of time thinking and praying through. After dismantling my accessories portion of my company, I began to explore ways in which to switch from accessories to Interior Design. I slowly began marketing myself and sharing the small projects I had done via social media. Essentially, I had to rebrand my company. Building my interior design business has reawakened my passion for design. I love seeing the before and after of a space, the transformation. Taking a room and redesigning it into a space the client loves is so gratifying.
Growing my business is a daily and weekly task. I am a stay at home mom of two as well as a business owner. It is a balancing act for sure! My design aesthetic is constantly evolving. I love mixing old and new, layering a space with textures and patterns and giving depth from color, antique furniture and unique conversation pieces. But more than anything, I love creating a room that evokes feelings of warmth and a sense of welcoming. A space that feels like home and one where you aren’t afraid to put your feet up. “Traditional with a twist” is my design motto.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, my goodness-where to do I start?! Ha! Joking aside, I have felt very blessed in my business journey since starting my company in 2012. It has evolved, grown, changed, stopped and started again. Towards the end of my accessories portion of my company, there were some heavy days of indecision and fear. Not knowing if I could rebuild again, going from one type of business to something so different. In my accessories business, I was selling my product, one I designed, but it was a physical product none the less. In an interior design business, you are selling your ideas and your vision, a much different model to be sure.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The name of my company is Molly Jane Designs. I specialize in residential interior design and renovations. Whether it be a guestroom, powder room, kitchen renovation or dining room redesign.

I don’t tend to follow a formula of layouts or design rules. If it feels right, I go with it. I also don’t tend to follow many of the “on trend” designs. I love timeless, classic spaces, but with a refreshing twist.

I am not afraid of patterns, colors, blending textures, layering old with new, etc. When working with a client, I love bringing in something personal for them into the project and building a part of the design scheme around that object, whether it be an old black and white photo or a vintage collection of toy cars.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
