Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Lashley and Caroline Dunham.
Morgan and Caroline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We started as a small online clothing boutique – selling women’s clothing and accessories, out of a spare bedroom in my home back in 2010. Ten years later, we have ten retail stores throughout the southeast and still operate the e-commerce business. Our location in Brookhaven opened three years ago, in November of 2017.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Haha. Smooth is definitely not the word I’d use to describe the journey. We’ve opened and closed three locations (so we would have more than a dozen stores now) that turned out to be a bust. We’ve run into personnel issues, like any business, throughout the years, and we’ve ALMOST survived 2020 – one of the toughest years the retail industry should ever have to see. This year has been especially tough as we had to close the doors of all of our stores for at least two months during the quarantine. We made a commitment to keep all of our full-time staff employed, so we paid rent and employees despite being closed. It was a struggle, but we wanted our employees to know that they come first.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Vestique Brookhaven story. Tell us more about the business.
Vestique sells trendy women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories at affordable prices. We offer lots of items you can only find at vestique, as we have worked with designers across the globe to create them ourselves. I think we are most proud of the growth our business has seen over the last decade despite starting with very little. We have just worked really hard and put in the sweat equity to make it happen!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’ve definitely had some lucky moments throughout our careers in retail, we’ve met the right people, found good real estate deals, etc. but I honestly attribute most of our success to hard work. We sacrificed a lot early on and still do to make this business work. We’re on the road and away from our families more than we’d like, but we still love coming to work every day.
