Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Potts.
Morgan, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
During my senior year of college, I went to sleep one normal night and had a dream in the middle of the night. I heard, “put whiskey in granola and call it Granarly.” The next day, no joke, I woke up and immediately went into the kitchen and began experimenting with putting whiskey in granola and it had a phenomenal taste!
I was going snowboarding the next week and decided Granarly would be the perfect snack to share with friends while flying down the mountain. So I bagged up a bunch of Granarly and shared it. Rewind a little bit. The same week I had the dream about Granarly, I was accepted into veterinary school, which was what I was going to college for. Talk about a tough decision… After months of trying to figure out what to do, the burning passion of starting Granarly inside me, and being more intrigued by the spice farms in Grenada than the actual school, I decided to turn down my acceptance and give Granarly ago!
It’s been quite the adventure but I feel like it’s only just beginning. I’ve constantly been stepping forward in faith and walking boldly into the doors that open for me. It’s led to amazing connections, opportunities, and adventures. I can’t wait to see all that we grow to be in the years to come!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but that would be boring?! It’s been quite an adventure. We’ve definitely had our losses and made our mistakes. We tried the food truck route, which was an absolute adventure in itself! It was such a blast and we met the most amazing people along the way, but it wasn’t the model of business we wanted to build on.
It’s been challenging to have NO experience in the snack food industry or food manufacturing for that matter. Also, no experience in business, either! But that hasn’t stopped us yet. It’s been a blast learning new things, messing up but getting back up, and overcoming the struggles along the way. Nothing has stopped us yet!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Granarly story. Tell us more about the business.
At Granarly, we know people are afraid to live outside their comfort zone. We believe every human has an adventurous life within, so we create on-the-go nutritious snacks to fuel people to live their gnarliest life. Right now, we specialize in creating on-the-go fun, funky, and flavorful whole grain snacks that fuel your body for everyday adventures. We have blends with whiskey baked into them, some sweetened with avocados, and some that taste like straight-up King Cake from Louisiana!
Most proud of… I think the courage we have to keep going. Building a business with no money is tough. Not giving up is tough. But what’s come out of those times? My team and I GLOW with passion. We get to encourage people every single day by sharing snacks! We get to inspire others to find adventure in their lives, and somehow along the way, we find ourselves becoming more “us” throughout the process.
We are whacky and wild – we are gnarly. That’s what sets us apart! We go against the grain and encourage everyone to be themselves – the wild, whacky, weird self that they were born to be!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck. I believe in the divine. I feel like sometimes things are truly meant to be and if you are open to walking through doors when they open and believe for the best things, that’s truly what you will find. If luck is a thing, I’m the luckiest girl in the world!
Granarly is such a gift to me. It has encouraged me to dig deep into the inner parts of myself to really go confidently in the direction of my dreams. To really be the person I was created to be. To continue growing and learning every single day!
It’s a gift because I get to have new experiences. I get to meet new people. I get to share my crazy story in hopes to inspire others. Luck or the divine or the meant to be – whatever you believe… it’s been everything to us. It’s what keeps us going. The hope and faith that something amazing is just around the corner!
