Meet Morgan Stalvey of Boardroom Hairstylists in North East Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Stalvey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Morgan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, I grew up in Covington, GA for half my life then moved to East Cobb when I was 12. I graduated high school and went to college to pursue a math degree. I knew this wasn’t the route I wanted to take so two years into college, I dropped out and enrolled in Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in November of 2014. It was a lot of hard work. My days consisted of 40 hour weeks of school plus an extra 30 working in a restaurant. I finally graduated in November of 2015. I didn’t start working until two years later because everything had to be put on hold because I found out I was pregnant right before I graduated. I started working for Boardroom Hairstylists in 2017 and since then, my clientele has blossomed into what it is today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any path has a smooth road. It was a struggle for me, one, I have an autoimmune disease which causes me not to be able to handle those 70 hour weeks of school and work. So having a career that is very demanding on the body is not all easy at times. Two, I became a single mom quickly after my daughter, Stella, was born. Although I had a lot of help from my family and friends, I did a lot on my own and lived on my own with my daughter. I think being a young, single mom was the hardest obstacle for me to overcome. It’s hard to balance mom life, dating, working, and taking care of yourself. Even though I struggled and still struggle with these things, I wouldn’t change where this road has led me for the world.

Tell us more about your work.
I am a hairdresser at Boardroom Hairstylists. I work beside some of the most amazing girls. I specialize in color mostly but I also cut men’s hair, specialize in Keratin treatments, extensions, and I’m licensed to do nails and facials. What I’m most proud of is how I’ve built up my clientele because that is not easy. There’s so much competition in this industry and it’s hard to get the ball rolling. You have to work hard and promote yourself every day, no matter how many clients you have already. I think what sets me apart from others, and I feel like I can say this for most hairdressers, is we aren’t just doing clients’ hair. We listen to their problems. I go through deaths, divorces, births, marriages, pretty much the good and the bad with my clients. People come to me not only looking for a good service but the conversation and company which is really important and special to me. My clients are family at this point in my career and it only gets better as the years go by.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have so many people to thank for where I am today. First and foremost, my parents, my sister, and my Mimi (grandmother). They are my biggest supporters, cheerleaders, and of course, my most frequent clients. Secondly, my fiancé, Erik, he has pulled me out of the darkest time in my life and he pushes me to pursue any dream of mine while also taking care of Stella, who is not biologically is. He’s stepped up to the plate and is the greatest man on this earth. Then, of course, I have to thank all the friends I have in and out of the hairdressing community. My instructors at Toni & Guy were awesome. Two of them, Moe & Cartez, especially have helped me and molded me into the stylist I am today. My boss and my best friend Katie, who I work with help me on a daily basis by inspiring me and helping me build more clientele. I really have a strong group of supporters. These people are my rock and also help out tremendously with Stella.
